Mahatma Gandhi was praised as -citizen of the world-. It is really welcoming announcement in India, on the day of Gandhi Jayanthi (October 2nd), that smoking in pubic place is now banned. India has already outlawed spitting and urinating in public. India is the third largest market for cigarettes, with up to 250 million smokers and a large number of passive smokers. Smoking is deadly and second hand smoke is harmful too. The person who smokes spoils his health. Not only that, the environment will get polluted by smoking. The non-smokers, who stand nearby the smokers in public place will also be get affected by this habit. The second hand smoke inhaled by these people, produces adverse effects, such as asthma, cancer, heart diseases, addiction and infection in respiratory organs. Smoking ban in public places Some people get this habit knowingly or unknowingly but many smokers want to quit this habit. Still awareness has to be created among the smokers regarding health problems arising due to this bad habit. Even though the ban for smoking exists in places like cinema halls, shopping malls, hotels, railway stations, bus stand, airport lounges and workplaces from October 2, the smokers can think about quitting this habit at home, to safeguard the health of themselves and family members. The family members of the smokers, can also insist and help them to quit the habit of smoking. Already smoking in public place is punishable but the person who is in-charge of maintaining the public place now has to take extra care to see that people should not smoke there. The fine on smoking in public places is mere Rs 200. Addiction to cigarette smoking Some people develop the habit of smoking continuously. The day starts for them with lighting of cigarette and throughout the day, much time and money spent for this and lasts until the end of the day. They are called -chain smokers-. Some people restrict themselves by smoking limited number of cigarettes per day. There is no use in taking New year resolution to quit this habit and after few days, to start it again. How to say goodbye to smoking in a gentle way? The quitting of any habit requires some process. The chain smokers can gradually reduce and limit the number of times of smoking and start to reduce the number gradually. The smoker can tell himself that he no more wants to be a smoker; he may even write it and hang it on the wall in his room and read his words several times, in a day. When he gets the temptation of smoking, he can engage himself in some work or hobbies which make him forget about smoking. He can keep a test for himself that he will not smoke for 24 hours. If he repeats it for several days, the temptation for smoking will leave. He can cut off the company of smokers and join with friends who remain as non-smokers. He can read and write the dangers caused by nicotine and he can educate others. He may be having the feeling that before educating others, first he should quit this habit. If suddenly he can not leave it, he can change the brand, which gives a displeasure and make him quit the habit. If he announces that he has quitted smoking, definitely he will be cautious of not smoking in front of others. He can hide or throw the items like lighters, matches and ashtrays, which help for smoking . The family members may give him a treat or he may give treat to himself, for quitting the habit of smoking, by seeing a movie, or going to a hotel etc. He should be very stubborn that he should not get the habit of smoking once again, after quitting. He can do physical exercise daily. Practicing of yoga, meditation and breathing exercise will give relief. Drinking one cup of water, juice or coffee will give the feeling of freshness. Those who can not quit even after practicing all the above, have to consult a doctor and take proper treatment. What are the benefits gained by quitting the habit of smoking? The family members will be happy, for being a good role model for the children. The money spent for cigarettes can be spent usefully. The health will be protected well.
