The recession has played havoc with the fuel prices and have made them trend lower. The situation is not going to be the same forever. As soon as the economic downturn reverses, there is going to be an increased demand for fuel and the prices of fuel are going to shoot up mote that the previous peak.

The reason for the increased prices will be the demand supply mismatch as always. The oil producing countries are not going to increase the production drastically. This will lead to a record boom in prices. Along with the increase in fuel prices, there can be an increased hoarding of fuel by some nations. This will further increase the prices.

Whenever there is an increase in the fuel prices, the people are burdened with an increased expenditure. This is because almost all families own vehicles. Most of us are in fact dependent on our vehicles.

There are a few ways in which you can try to reduce the fuel consumption of your vehicle. They are:

1. Car pooling :
This is an old concept that has seen many takers in recent times when the fuel prices boomed. Here most people from the same locality traveling to destinations that are close to each other travel by the same vehicle and share the cost of travel.

2. Vehicle condition: Always do regular servicing for your vehicles. This will help reduce the fuel consumption and increase the mileage of the vehicle.

3. Turn off at lights: When you are at a traffic light, if the wait is going to be more than 15 seconds, it is better to switch off the vehicle and restart it when the lights are turning to green.

4. Do not keep holding the clutch: Most people when they drive keep a foot on the clutch of the vehicle. This leads to extra fuel consumption by the vehicle.

Other methods of saving fuel are :
1. Take the public transport system if it is convenient. Most cities have some form of transport that can be used if it is comfortable
2. Try riding a bicycle. It not only is a fuel saving alternative mode of travel, but also good for the health.
3. Try removing the unnecessary weight from your vehicle and it will increase the efficiency of the engine and save fuel.

These are methods that everyone can follow. These tips will especially be useful when the fuel prices start trending higher. This will save a lot of money.
