Owning a two wheeler is very common in every single house in India. It has made our commute easier. But at the same time, it has put our lives at risk. Every one at home, gets worried if their loved ones do not return home from work on time. When their loved ones are late from work for a couple of hours without prior information, they get worried. All this is because of the dangerous traffic system and driving conditions in most of the streets in India. There is no safety for the drivers and need loads of luck to reach home safe. Even the traffic police, who stand in the middle of the road is in the danger of hit and run from the speeding vehicles. The traffic system and driving conditions in most of the streets in India is quite unsafe and dangerous.

How many people die in road accidents in India?
- India has recorded over 1,05,749 deaths in the year 2006.
- In 2007 more than 95,000 people were killed in road accidents in India, with Delhi contributing 2,169 deaths to the toll.

In India, specially in the Metros and other major cities, people nearly spend more than a couple of hours in traffic in a day on commuting due to traffic. Specially, working women would be delighted if they get some of that time to spend with their families and doing household chores.

The first thing that every foreigner / tourist mocks about India, is this indisciplined and crazy traffic. You don't see any single tourist to India, driving a rental car. Though there are some reputed car rental companies in India like Hertz, they rent it with the driver. Indian driving conditions are trauma to them and they dare not to self drive. A foreign client, who visited our company in Chennai, commented that he has never heard so many honks on the road while driving, and was really shocked when an auto driver crossed the red light without stopping. He claimed that it was the toughest road experience he has every had in any country.

In India, it is no so hard to get the driving license for 2 wheeler or 4 wheeler. During the learner's permit test, they display all the signs with the details. So, the applicant has to just see that and answer the questions. It is not necessary to learn for the permit test. But in other countries, even to get the learner's license, the evaluation is very strict and one needs to be aware of all the rules and regulations and then attend the test to get your learner's license. You can imagine, how hard it would be to get a driving license. It is really difficult to clear the driving test and obtain license in countries such as Dubai and Australia. This ensures that when you get your license, you know the rules and the laws are enforced strictly, that you are forced to follow it. Indian driving license is not recognized in any other countries outside India. But, if a person has US license, he can drive in Australia too.

I read a statistic saying that India accounts for about 10% of road accident fatalities in the world. 1 person dies every 6 minutes; 10 are injured. as told by BBC; September 2005. Road accidents are on the rise every year. Where to start to change this situation?

It is of utmost importance that both the Government and public go hand in hand and make India a better place for disciplined driving.

Government's responsibilities
1. Enforce strict rules about issuing the driving license.
2. Improve the road infrastructure and construction. Road design should integrate all modes of transport like bus, lorry, two wheeler, car and also the pedestrian.
3. Adopt better traffic signaling and controlling equipment.
4. Make it one way where ever necessary to avoid congestion.
5. Place proper traffic signs specially the bump ahead, intersection, merging etc. so that public gets an idea of what is ahead of them.
6. Post speed limit on all roads and set up a detector that signals when over speeding.
7. Enforce stringent punishment and stiff fines for the violators.
8. Proper driving etiquette should be taught before issuing license.

Responsibilities of the driving public
1. Follow the rules and regulations while driving.
2. Avoid drunken driving.
3. Don't drive when sleepy or tired.
4. Avoid road rage. Keep cool when driving.
5. Avoid reckless driving.
6. Avoid overspeeding.
7. focus on the road and not get listen to walkman/ipod or attend to cellphone.
8. Plan your drive so that you need not rush to reach on time.
9. Avoid dangerous passing of the vehicles in front.
10. Usage of proper signalling while changing lanes, turning.
11. Always wait for the pedestrians.
12. Car pool whenever possible.

Another major cause of accidents is jay walking by pedestrians. Pedestrians should realize that they too are bound by traffic rules .
1. Usage of subway to cross a busy road wherever it is available.
2. Usage of subway to cross railway tracks. People rarely use the subway to cross train tracks. So many fatalities due to people carelessly crossing the tracks while talking on the cellphone have been reported.
3. Usage of pavement while walking and crossing only at zebra crossings.

With such heavy population and less infrastructure and drastic increase in vehicular traffic, government has taken several measures to modify current traffic control methods. But all this will go waste if we citizens do not abide by the rules. All of us Indians, must cooperate to change the chaotic road traffic situation in India.

Follow the rules. Drive safe!
