Gestational diabetes is diabetes during pregnancy. This is increasingly becoming common. The reasons for the increase in the number of women with gestational diabetes can be due to the various lifestyle changes that have happened in the recent years. This lifestyle change can be an increased intake of food that is processed. It can also be due to the decrease in the exercise done.

There are various specific risk factors for a woman to get gestational diabetes or diabetes during pregnancy. These risk factors are listed below.

1. Diabetes in a relative:
The relative must be a first-degree relative. This means that diabetes present in the parents or in the sibling can be a high risk of causing gestational diabetes.

2. Recurrent abortion: The exact reason for this is not known,. But it has been seen in many women that after repeated abortions there is a higher incidence of diabetes. One reason for this can be the advancing age of the women.

3. Unexplained stillbirth can also cause gestational diabetes.

4. Congenital abnormality in the fetus can also cause gestational diabetes. This can be vice versa also. Diabetes has also been found to be a common reason for congenital abnormalities in children.

5. Previous gestational diabetes: Since gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and then subsides once the baby is born, this can occur again during the next pregnancy. There is a higher risk in mothers who have had gestational diabetes already to get it again during the next pregnancy.

6. Persistent glycosuria: Glucose that is present in the urine of women can lead to gestational diabetes. So persistent glycosuria is a major risk factor for the woman to get gestational diabetes.

7. Weight of the baby: When the baby is weighing heavier than normal, then the woman is at a higher risk of getting gestational diabetes.

Identifying Gestational diabetes:

Though the woman at a high risk of getting gestational diabetes can be identified, the actual diagnosis of gestational diabetes is another matter. There are various methods of identifying gestational diabetes. The most common method is the Glucose tolerance test, commonly known as the GTT.

Glucose Tolerance Test:

The initial blood glucose level of the women is measured. Then a measured amount of glucose is given to the pregnant woman to drink. This glucose intake is done periodically and the blood sample is also collected periodically to measure the glucose level in the blood and the glucose tolerance is measured.

The measured range of glucose tolerance in the pregnant woman is compared with the normal range. After comparison, any change from the normal level can be seen as an indicator for the woman being at a high risk of getting gestational diabetes. This glucose tolerance test is the common and important method of identifying a pregnant woman with diabetes.

These are the various risk factors and testing methods to identify a woman with diabetes during pregnancy. This gestational diabetes has to be controlled to keep the risk factors at bay. This will help to increase the chances of a safe delivery with good health to the baby and the mother being ensured.
