-We need to start thinking differently!" -Don't think of what your country can do for you… instead, think of what you can do for your country!!!- How many times have we heard that preached over and over again? How many times have our ear drums been put through the torture of such speeches over and over again? How many times have our elected office holders in government plagued us with such statements? The funny thing about these set of preachers though is that before being elected into office, they run very much like a one man army, promising to do it all but after being elected… well, you can imagine the rest of the story. Now, to these preachers who feel very strongly about the opening statements, how many of them have given concrete and tangible ways of doing exactly this? How many of them, given the chance or not, can give adequate and sustainable solutions or directions (if you choose) for the execution of this -wonderful- idea? No… no one. ? Every one is content to just speak and continue speaking. How can people be motivated to strive for excellence for a nation where corruption is so rife, it's a crime not to be a part of it? Where those who are expected to uphold the rule of law and protect the human rights of the citizenry end up championing the exact opposite? Where the only thing you have to do for a free ticket to jail is not to give N20 or to walk at 9:00 pm along the road, irrespective of where you are coming from? (ask the police/people in Edo state, Nigeria), or in some places, just be black? Indeed, it's really discouraging, all of this. However, the above opening statements do have some truth in them… with adequate editing of course. The correct statement is this; -don't think of what your country can do for you… instead think of what you can do for yourself and your fellow man!!!- -think positive!!!- This, dear friends is the truth of the matter. This is where the scales fall off our eyes and we begin to see the truth because most times, if we wait for our country, -sokpan-(Nigerian Pidgin word for Suffering) will become our national anthem. We need to start recognizing the need to start looking out for ourselves, for one another and then, some more looking out. This is a time where we have to put aside our differences as individuals and start looking to our strengths, collectively. There is no greater example of this than the second world war. The Nazis, under the Adolf Hitler presented the world with a grave threat: the loss of world peace and human rights/freedom. Major world powers at that time recognized the implications of this threat and realized that individually, they didn't stand a chance but collectively… hence the birth of the ALLIES. Also, world intelligence outfits, from the CIA, the British MI5/6, the French Deuxieme Bureau/Gestapo, amongst others, came together, even though some not knowingly or willingly, pooling resources and manpower with the sole aim of gathering intelligence to combat the Nazis. This contributed largely to the success of OPERATION LUCY, the most secret spy ring of the second world war. In these times unfortunately, the threats facing us as a people are no less of a serious nature. We need to come together and make it all work out… Another thing we also need to do is to get rid of the nature of distrust. It is man's nature to distrust his fellow man but we need to change that. Referring too to the second world war, it was the innate distrust of Winston Churchill, then prime minister of Britain that made the then prime minister of the soviet union, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin almost lose the soviet union to the Nazis as he repeatedly ignored warnings by Britain of imminent attack by Germany. We need to stop thinking that man's nature is inherently evil and start to look more at the fact that we have the ability to cause the change that we want, if we want them so much. Added to this, the need for a reconstruction of the mindset of the youths cannot be overemphasized. Even as a people, we need to start thinking big. Yes… everyone screams at the slightest opportunity : -think big… think different…- yes, but it doesn't just stop at thinking big and different… I take it one step further: THINK OWNERSHIP. This coupled with decisive action will create for us, the promise land that we so desire. One thing we must know, and begin to understand is that the promise land is nowhere but here, in our beloved country… all we need to do is to start looking inwards and above for the creative ideas and strategies that we need to make things happen. Ever wondered what would happen if every Citizen of the world gave 100 of whatever currency they use? Using Nigeria as a case study, what if every Nigerian gave 100 naira? The result is the power of UNITY. I don't think we really understand the statement -strength in diversity-. When we fully comprehend this fact, together with the reasoning that we only have one life on one planet to enjoy all the wealth we have been able to amass, there will be no limits to what we can accomplish. Imagine what will happen if Storm Records, Mo'hits Records and Kennis Music come together to work on a project, each with their own cache of contacts, funds and expertise? What if Edegbe Line, Agofure Line and Bob Izua motors come together? What of the coming together of Dangote and Jimmy Ibrahim to operate a charity organization? The list of possible, ground breaking collaborations is endless. The reason we do not feel so much impact is because we leave it all for a select few… we are content to just watch… and the most disgusting part, we JUDGE!!! As unfortunate as this may sound, there will still be those who will not make any mark on this planet; those who will go through life without affecting a life positively. It is true there are three categories of people: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who talk about the things that happen. The funny thing however is that we all get to choose the category we belong to. It takes more than ordinary and normal to make things happen… it takes genius. It takes SUPERNATURAL.
