Hypertension or increased blood pressure is a condition that can cause major health problems in young people. In young people, hypertension usually does not occur, but one of the conditions that cause hypertension in young people is renal artery stenosis. The hypertension in young people may also be due to various other causes. Some of the other causes of hypertension in young age can be the obesity of certain people. It can also be due to various systemic changes due to disease process.

Renal artery Stenosis:

The renal artery stenosis is a problem in which the artery that supplies blood to the kidney of a person has a decreased size that is due to various reasons. The condition usually is common in the people above 50 years of age, but can also occur in younger people. In the younger age group, it can be seen more common in women than in men. The renal arteries are those that supply blood to the kidney and when there is a narrowing of this artery, it is called as renal artery stenosis. The stenosis can occur due to reasons like fibro plastic dysplasia. It can also be seen in people who have atherosclerotic plaques.

The blood that has to go to the kidney gets blocked in this condition and the blood has to flow with high pressure and this is called as Reno vascular hypertension because the increased blood pressure is due to this problem. This is a common cause for secondary hypertension and is the commonest cause of young age hypertension.

Diagnosing renal artery stenosis:

There are various methods of diagnosing this condition. The usual method in which this is identified is due to a routine check up when the person can be diagnosed with increased blood pressure. This is especially true in the younger age group. In some people, kidney failure may be the first sign of this condition.

Renal artery stenosis can also be identified with Doppler where the deceased blood flow can be identified. MRI can identify the cause of the stenosis.

Signs of Renal artery Stenosis:

A person with renal artery stenosis will have increased blood pressure.

Decreased functioning of the kidney that is affected.

If both arteries are stenosed, the person can have renal failure.

Treatment of Renal artery Stenosis:

A person with renal artery stenosis may have various complications and symptoms. The treatment of choice is to treat the hypertension in unilateral conditions. If the person has been identified in the late stage, the person could have damaged kidneys and this may need dialysis and even kidney transplant.

If the condition has been identified early, stenting of the renal artery will help to increase the lumen of the artery so that the person can have the regular amount of blood supplied to the kidneys. This is especially done in young people who do not respond well to the anti hypertensive drugs. If there are no other problems, the person can continue to take anti hypertensive drugs to try and keep the blood pressure under control.
