Relocate to India. Life of Software Engineers moving back to IndiaBY: Bharat | Category: Family | Post Date: 2008-11-18
Did you notice recently that more and more Indian professionals, especially the Software Engineers are increasingly willing to relocate back to India. Many recruiting companies have reported an unusual increase of job applications from people who have been working in United States (yeah the mighty USA) and other countries for years and now moving back to India for good. What are the reasons behind it? .. lets have a closer look. WHY ARE SOFTWARE ENGINEERS WILLING TO RELOCATE TO INDIA FOR GOOD? 1. Job market in United States is detoriating: USA is currently in recession and people are losing jobs big time. Even though the situation is not that bad as often reported in media (with mirch-masala), there is surely a high sense of insecurity. USA is no more the only country where all the best technological innovation goes on, Desi Software Engineers have increasingly delivered cutting edge projects. 2. Salary difference is shrinking: A decade back there was a lot of difference between the salary levels for a Software Engineer working in United States and India. These days however, your life in India with your rupee salary is very much comparable to the life in Dollars in United States. To relocate back is not that bad, at least financially. Also, annual salary raises in India are usually around 10%-15% while in US it's around 4%-8% per year. Also bank interest rates are much better, so your savings grow faster (but loans are expensive). 3. Increased cost of Health-care in United States: Even though the cost of healthcare is going up in both countries, it is especially going up very fast in United States. Many of my friends tell that they now pay about $500 per month for medical and dental insurance. Plus they have to pay an additional copay with every visit plus a huge detectable annually. These costs are projected to keep going up. Medical costs in US have anyways been high but recently they have ballooned even bigger. Part of the reason is that the percentage of population getting old in US is increasing every year, mainly because of the big wave of retirement of the Baby Boomer generation. In fact the cost of most insurances in the USA is projected to go up every year. 4. Education for Kids: Indian kids do well in studies because they see competition at every corner - school, entrance exams etc.. United States on the other hand is increasingly lagging in Maths and Science. There is no doubt that their higher education is the best but its getting increasingly costly as well. Parents relocating back to India can get their children admitted into good schools and have a greater satisfaction. 5. Love for India and reunion with Parents: Parents are another reason why many people want to come back. They often cannot effort to get their parents in United States or may be parents are not willing to come themself. 6. Immigration Issues: Many people are tired of H1-B and green card mess and want to live a more secure life. There is no doubt that one can lead a much better quality of life in United States, additionally not worrying about power cuts, corruption etc .. but it's an old saying, an Indian always remains an Indian. MAJOR ADVANTAGES OF MOVING BACK TO INDIA: 1. Getting a job is easier and a good salary: Thanks to websites like Naukri.com etc, most Software Engineers are able to get job while they are in United States and then resign from their US job comfortably. People with multi year experience in United States have a great advantage because they can easily fit into projects involving outsourcing or interaction with the US based clients. If you have a Masters Degree from US, it can certainly help to boost your resume and salary. Individuals can expect to get a salary of about 1-2 lakhs per month. 2. Domestic services and helpers: For about 5 to 10 thousand per month you will be able to get the following services * A part time maid servant to cook food. * Wash utensils and floor. * Do your laundry and janitorial services. * Go to market and buy food for you. For Additional few thousand dollars you can even have a full day house maid or a domestic helper (often called servant). You can even get a driver for about 8 to 12 thousand rupees per month. Therefore if you are earning well and can spend about 20,000 - 25,000 rupees on domestic services, you can live like a king. 3. Food: Yes, all those dreams of spicy Indian chaat, and remember that food in your neighborhood you always loved, all those are accessible now. You can get the best chole-bhaturee, dosa, kababs, Indian chinese food .. all at your convenience. Oh yes, if you do miss Domino's, McDonalds, Taco Bell etc., everything is available now in India. 4. Less expensive health care: Most likely your company will provide a cheap (but good) health insurance, even if they don't - no problem. The cost of medical crare is far less than United States. You can even have a doctor visit your home and take a look at your child when he is sick. 5. More social life: You will attend more marriage parties, your wife will probably have multiple kitty parties and enjoy the typical auntie talks. "Show off" in India is big time, so there will be some disadvantages in that part, but overall your social life in India will be much better. THINGS THAT TAKE TIME TO ADJUST, AFTER YOU RELOCATE: (Disadvantages) For a few years you will continually miss some good and easy life of United States but after a year of so, things will settle down. As I mentioned above, things like pollution, courtesy, power cuts, bribery law and order issues etc .. take a while to get use to it ( Again !). There are several advantages and disadvantages of moving to India, basically it is a whole package.
