Quirk Quota Qualm - Justified!BY: Abhi | Category: Education | Post Date: 2009-09-11
What I intend to write here in this piece has got no bearing with the strong alliteration in the title! The quirk (faulty) quota system in the education system in India justifiably evokes qualm (misgivings). What is quota? It is an unfounded, baseless and unacceptable allocation of the seats in the colleges of India for a certain group of people. In fact it is a Supreme Court ruling and quota system is followed by all and sundry, technology institutes, medical colleges, universities like Delhi University (DU), University of Calcutta (CU), etc. Management quota is the worst possible feature of education in technology and related institutes. In the name of ‘management quota', institutes are thriving in their business. Often undeserving students who are luckily from opulent families get into prestigious institutes by paying lacs for a seat. A recent revelation by a news channel confirmed a medical institute almost ‘auctioning' for MBBS/MD seats for which ‘bidding' started at 40-50 lacs, so we know how much they ‘sold' it for! Second comes SC/ST quota. What's that? We say, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. What on earth are such terms doing in the 21st century? Seats allocated for SC/ST's have no foundation on this day. What has caste got to do with what we are today? It is more than time to stop clinging to some silly sectionalizing based on superstitions done by some unscrupulous people centuries ago, and of course allocating seats on such ridiculous basis are mere shaggy dog stories. Yes, seats booked for physically disabled people makes a lot more than just sense. No problems with that. I personally don't have a problem with sports/cultural quota too, because it is on the basis of one's hard worked accomplishment in a certain field that's gaining him a seat. It is best to scrap quotas except the ones of PD's, and if quota is considered a tradition then its tolerable to keep going on with that, but on a condition that caste quota is replaced by quota based on economic/financial state. That would ensure poverty does not impede one's future.
