Quality Business Strategy. CMMI certification, Six sigma standardBY: JNLakshmi | Category: Technology and Computers | Post Date: 2008-09-10
Software is predominant in our day to day life. It is used in all sectors of work and has become vital right from Satellites to petty shop. Major software outsourcing comes to India. It is very important that the companies match international standards to attract global business. So, Software Development process should be optimized to compete in the world market. With the growing demand in the software industry, the organizations that outsource their work to other software companies are looking for certain standards in them so that they get quality work. One such standard is CMMI certification. The CMMI certification adds value to its client's businesses through well-established and structured methodologies and techniques. A company with this certification gets recognition of their expertise by producing quality software. It exposes the good software practices handled by them. CMMI is capability Maturity model and Integration. CMMI version 1.2 is the current version. It is the software process model, designed by Software Engineering Institute (SEI). SEI is a part of Carnegie Mellon University which is a premier Institute in USA, located in Pittsburg. CMM is superseded by CMMI. It is an enhanced version of the Capability Maturity Model that integrates various other frameworks created by SEI. More than half the world's CMM Level 5 companies are based in India. All the upcoming software companies have CMM level 3 at least. Infosys Technologies Ltd. is the first Indian software company to be assessed at CMM Integrated (CMMI(SM)) Level 5 for its offshore and onsite operations in Chennai delivery center in the year 2002. With CMMI enhancing its process through innovative technological improvements, Cognizant Technology solutions, delivery center in Coimbatore, has become the first in the world to be successfully appraised at CMMI version 1.2 in the year 2006. CMMI is not only a model for software. It has categories of development and acquisition. Hardware, software, and systems engineering also apply CMMI and enjoy its benefits. CMM-based programs cannot be driven without the support of both top management and employees. There are 5 levels of CMMI. Level 5 is the highest level on the maturity scale. Level 1 - Initial. With very basic or no document .tion of resources, time, budget and scope. There is no well defined system. At this stage, it all depends on the software developer to complete the project on time with so called quality. Level 2 - Organization forms a process to overcome the inefficiencies. All the requirements and change requirements are well documented. The software development process including the quality assurance is managed Level 3 - Defined. Organization engineering process is focused. Procedures are standardized. All the engineering and management activities are well aligned. Level 4 - Managed. The process is fully automated. Quantitative statistical data are collected from all process and analyzed. Every project is managed using quantitative information. Level 5 -Optimizing. In this stage, continuous improvements of the process is carried out and modified to keep in pace with the upcoming technology. When a new technology comes up, cost benefit analysis has to be done and a proposed change to the processes has to be done. Another methodology in business management that achieves organizational quality is Six sigma. Six sigma is a program to address quality and customer satisfaction issues. It is becoming a standard practice in manufacturing, service and software companies. This strategy is originally invented and developed by Motorola, in 1980's. Later, it is mastered by GE and this is now been practiced by several corporate like ABB, Kodak, Ford, Mumbai's Dabbawala, and several BPO and IT companies like Wipro, CTS, Honeywell. Companies in banking sector, airlines, and telecom have successfully implemented Six sigma. To achieve six sigma, the process must produce no more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. Well, this shows its high proficiency and many corporate in the world has implemented it. There is no single body designated to provide Six Sigma certification. There are several companies providing Six Sigma training and many consulting companies provide certification. It has six levels based on based on the number of defects per million units. They grade it as black belt, green belt, master black belt. In a small scale company with 250 people needs about 3 Black Belt and about 20 Green Belt. Six sigma is not a competitor for CMMI. Six sigma and CMMI help organizations improve their business methodologies, marketplace, competitiveness and achieve much higher success in business. To outplay in this competitive world, quality focused Entrepreneurs are turning out their business into powerhouses of quality with breathtaking clarity and perfection to achieve phenomenal growth.
