Performance appraisal is the method of evaluating the efficiency and the work behavior of a staff in an organization. Performance appraisal is actually a periodic formal evaluation of how well the employee has performed his/her duties during a specific time period. Assessment of the employees working in the organization is a great help to the employers. It helps in improving the quality of service provided by the organization to the clients. Performance appraisal is now being included for almost all employees in many organizations. It requires that the leader or head of the departments concerned develop competence in assessing the quality of the performance of his/her subordinate objectively and effectively. The main purpose of the assessment of an employee is to appraise the immediate and potential value of the person. So it should actually be considered that performance appraisal is a positive activity that will bring out the potential of the individual. In many organizations, the performance appraisal is considered as a tool where the shortcomings of the employee are noted. There should also be a clear difference between performance appraisal and job evaluation. Job evaluation is the determination of worth of different jobs, while the performance appraisal is actually concerned with the measurement of the worth of the individual. The other purposes of the performance appraisal are: 1. To determine the job competence of the employee. It helps to judge if the employees are performing at their optimal level. 2. Performance appraisal also helps to enhance the staff development and motivates the personnel towards higher achievement. 3. It helps in discovering an employee's aspirations and to recognize their accomplishments 4. It helps to improve the communication between various levels of staff, leading to an increased understanding of the objectives of the organization. 5. It improves the performance of individuals by encouraging better relationship between employees. 6. It helps to make a note of the talent pool present within the organization and reassess assignments. This will help the organization to function effectively and efficiently. 7. Performance appraisal helps to identify the various training needs of the individuals. It also helps to identify the developmental needs of the individuals. The strengths and weaknesses of each of the staff can be identified and appropriate steps can be taken to improve the personnel. These are the major functions or purposes of the performance appraisal. It brings out the efficiency and needs of the employees. The performance appraisal is also a tool in the hands of the management that will help make the organization function better.
