We expect that our private details should remain private unless we wish to disclose it to others. All the educated people are using internet now. It is a wonderful means of communication with anybody, living anywhere in the world. The internet helps in our daily life in getting quick and reliable information within a short time on any topic. It helps job seekers to find a suitable job. The happenings in all fields, in the world are reaching public within seconds. When there is advancement in some field, it will have some side effects definitely. Similarly, in the cyberspace also, our privacy is questioned. The rules and regulations controlling internet are not yet formulated correctly. When a need arises, rules are framed to control cybercrime. Threat to privacy in cyberspace: While navigating through internet, we provide information to others. Each computer connected to internet has a unique IP address. Knowing our IP address by somebody is a form of entering in privacy. The ISP's (Internet service providers) protect our privacy to a certain extent. The laws concerning protection of privacy in cyberspace differ from country to country. Everybody has got email account now. We daily send and receive mails. We give our email ID to many people. If ISP suspects about the spam mails, they may view the content of the mail. While signing up, some ISPs ask for a consent agreement from those who are applying for opening a new email account. If a person is using email service from office, and if the email system is owned by employer, he may inspect the mails of employees. While using instant messages, list serves, social networks, forwarding of messages and even junk emails constitute disclosure of email address to unknown persons. The web browsers are aware of websites visited by us, while browsing. Some browsers help for deleting personal data like history, password and cookies. We can restrict cookies to enhance privacy but many operations like online banking or online shopping are not allowing to choose privacy settings. Some banks have a system of passwords and encryption to safeguard the personal details such as login ID and other information. We should not respond to unsolicited requests for passwords or account numbers. The search engines also store information like IP address, the terms we search, the time used etc., To protect ourselves from the threat for privacy, we have to use a separate search engine for searching data and for other purposes like email, we have to choose some other website. Some Web sites use Web bugs to track who is viewing their pages and record their IP address. The personal information provided for marketing purpose in one website may be sold to another company. When it is asked for permission from us for sending information or offer, we can decline it. Installing an antivirus program and firewall may help to save our personal information from stealing by others. We can use credit card to do financial transactions and the usage of debit card should be avoided. While making transaction using credit card, while giving the credit card number, on the right bottom of the screen , we have to check whether the security certificate is up-to-date, to keep away from danger. We should not use a public terminal, while giving our personal details and doing online transaction. We have to give password in such a way that others cannot guess and we have to change the password often. We have to use internet safely and enjoy the full benefits of it. The precautions against threat to privacy should be taken to avoid danger and loss.
