Many people suffer from diabetic ulcer because of nerve damage in their feet. This nerve damage can result in loss of sensation of the feet of those affected by diabetes. Decreased blood supply in the feet is also a reason for ulcers on the feet.

There are various methods of preventing and treating the diabetic ulcers when they occur. Adequate self care measures will help the person to prevent the ulcer. Prevention of the ulcer is very important because once an ulcer is formed; it is very difficult to treat the ulcer. The first ulcer can also predispose the foot for more ulcers. Sometimes the ulcers can become infected and can even become fatal if proper care is not taken. Diabetic ulcers are one of the most common reasons for below knee amputations.

Prevention and treatment for diabetic ulcers:

1. Adequate protective footwear:

The person with the diabetic ulcer should understand the need for protective footwear. The foot wear that will prevent the foot from getting ulcer should have a soft insole and a hard outer sole. It should have adjustable straps and also a back strap. Other than this, it would be best for the footwear to be correct fitting.

2. Walking:
The individual should avoid walking bare foot as this can complicate matters and cause ulcers.

3. Immobilization:
The best method of curing an ulcer is rest. The person should have the foot with the ulcer in complete rest. If the foot with the ulcer is kept on the ground and the patient walks, then it will make the ulcer to become big.

4. Total contact cast:
In those who have an ulcer, but rest is not possible, the foot can be kept in a total contact cast. This will help to keep the ulcer on the foot from being unnecessarily mobilized. This immobilization method is commonly used to help treat an ulcer.

5. Dressing:
Dressing is very important in an ulcer to prevent it from getting infected. Various dressing materials are used to help in cleaning and covering the ulcer to prevent infections. Many people think that dressing itself will cure an ulcer, but it has to be understood that rest is the best method of healing an ulcer.

6. Self care:
Prevention of an ulcer includes adequate self care of the foot by the person affected. The person has to keep looking at the feet for the presence of any red spots. These red spots are the first sign of an ulcer. Adequate inspection of the foot each day will help in early identification of ulcer. The nails have to be cut in proper method to prevent them from causing any complication.

These are some of the important methods that are used in preventing and also treating a person with diabetic ulcer. If adequate care is not taken, the ulcer can become very badly infected and in those with uncontrolled diabetes, there is a very high risk of the foot being amputated. Prevention is better than cure as far as diabetic ulcers are concerned.
