Precautions to be taken in old age to prevent diseases

Old age is usually synonymous with disease. People who are young are considered to be very healthy. This notion is changing as the diseases of old age are now creeping into the people of younger age groups. Still, old age is very high risk for various diseases. People also have crossed sixty years of age are more prone to get diseases like arthritis and other such conditions.

1. Safety: Safety is very important as a person gets old. The individual has to be safe in walking and in doing various activities. The main reason behind this is that as a person does not care about the safety, the risk of falls increase. Once the individual has a high risk of falls, then some day they might fall and cause injury. In people of the younger age group, the healing of the damaged tissue is quicker. As a person gets old, the damage may not be repaired completely. Even if the repair is done, the repair of the tissue may not be complete. This is the main reason that safety is very important in old age.

2. Medications: As the person gets older, the number of medications that the person has to take may increase. The medications are a very important factor in delaying and also in preventing diseases. These medications have to be taken regularly. Some people might not remember to take the medications. This can cause diseases. In fact one of the common reasons for stroke is the irregular treatment of hypertension. Some people might think that they need to take medications only when they have various symptoms. Diseases can kill silently. So medications are very important to prevent diseases in old age.

3. Mental function: Mental function is very important factor that can prevent diseases. If a person is mentally strong, then they may not get any disease for a long time as this will keep them alert. They will also try to be safe and take medications regularly. If the mental function of the person deteriorates, then they become more prone for various other diseases. Regular reading of various books and also keeping the mind sharp will help the individual to maintain their mental function. This in turn will prevent the person from getting any diseases.

4. Walking: Walking is the most simple and efficient exercise in old age to prevent many diseases. The walking can be brisk or more relaxed depending on the level of fitness of the individual. As the person gets older, they might need some assistance like a walker or a walking stick to aid them. These should be provided after proper medical evaluation. Walking can prevent or delay the occurrence of various diseases.

5. Food: The food that a person eats as they get old is very important. The food should be nutritious and also have a balance of various nutrients. This will help in keeping the person to be disease free for a longer period of time. Diet is very important to prevent diseases like cardio vascular problems, diabetes and hypertension. These are the diseases that can cause various levels of morbidity and even mortality. So food is very important to prevent diseases.
