Pneumonia is a very common disease. There are many people who suffer from pneumonia. Even children who are just born can suffer from pneumonia. I t can also be fatal in many patients. This article presents the various signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment methods of pneumonia. Pneumonia is an inflammatory disease of the lungs. The lung tissue that includes the alveoli may be abnormal. The abnormality can be due to alveolar filling with fluid. As already said, pneumonia can occur in all and any age group. It is one of the leading causes of death in the elderly people and those who are chronically and terminally ill. Signs and Symptoms: 1. Cough, chest pain, fever and difficulty in breathing. 2. The oxygen is not allowed to reach the lungs by the fluid collection in the alveoli. 3. People with infectious pneumonia bring out sputum by coughing. The color of this sputum can be yellow or greenish in color due to the infection. 4. The fever can be accompanied by chills. 5. Shortness of breath is very common. There can be also pleuritic pain in the chest. This pain can be a sharp stabbing pain that is felt during deep breathing or while coughing. 6. People with pneumonia can also cough up blood. 7. Headaches can also be present with sweaty and clammy skin. 8. Some people can have loss of appetite, fatigue, blueness of the skin, nausea, vomiting, mood swings and joint pains. Treatment: Many cases can be treated without hospitalization. Oral antibiotics, rest and home care is sufficient in minor conditions. In people who are suffering with pneumonia with trouble in breathing, hospitalization is necessary. In the elderly also, hospitals are the best places to treat the pneumonia. The treatment will be the same in hospitals with oral antibiotics and rest, but the continuous monitoring is essential to treat any emergency. Prevention: There are many ways of preventing pneumonia. Treating the underlying cause may usually help in suppressing the pneumonia. 1. Smoking cessation can help to decrease the incidence of pneumonia. This is because it can increase the lung problem. Cigarette smoke can also decrease the immune systems effect on various diseases. 2. Testing pregnant women for certain infections can prevent the child from being infected with pneumonia. 3. Suctioning the mouth and throat of infants with meconium stained amniotic fluid immediately after birth will help in decreasing the incidence of pneumonia. 4. Vaccinations are very helpful in preventing pneumonia in both adults and children. These are the various signs and symptoms that can be present in a person with pneumonia. Prevention is better than to cure a person who has acquired the disease. Article Source: http://www.saching.com About Author / Additional Info: I am a physiotherapist by profession.
