Physical therapist's role in treating and preventing various disorders.

A physical therapy degree is much sought after in many parts of the world. There are many reasons for people wanting to become a physical therapist. The job requires a person to have adequate care and concern for the patient. Physical therapy is actually the rehabilitation of a patient who has various impairments to be able to return back to either normal or optimal function.

Physical therapy involves the use of exercises and other modalities to treat impairments. There are various career opportunities for physical therapists. These are detailed in this article.

1. Patient care:

The most common career option after a physical therapy degree is obtained is to work in a hospital based health care setting. People are also involved in working in the community to provide community based rehabilitation. There are also physical therapists who work in home based physical therapy care. The role of a physical therapist in patient care includes patients who are affected by neurological, orthopedic and cardio pulmonary problems. People affected by diseases of these systems and requiring physical therapy are initially assessed and treated accordingly.

2. Research:

Research is a very important aspect of the physical therapy work. Evidence based practice is being practiced by most physical therapists and for that more research is needed. People contribute by doing research while doing their regular jobs. There are some physical therapists that are specialized to work only in the research field.

3. Geriatrics:

People who are old are increasing in number. The role of a Physical therapist amidst this group of patients is increasing. Methods of preventing disability including fall prevention and also treatment of various old age disorders form a major chunk of a physical therapists work. Many of the problems that affect the people in this age group are preventable, so the prevention of the problems play a major part of a therapists work. Treating other conditions like arthritis with pain relieving techniques is also the role of a physical therapist.

4. Sports Physical therapy:

The role of a Physical therapist in sports is very important. A Physical therapist prevents the occurrence of injury with effective stretching and strengthening routines for the sports person. Any ligament muscle or joint injury on the play field is promptly assessed and treated appropriately or the injured person is referred to a higher center for management.

5. Role of a Physical therapist in women's health:

The role of a Physical therapist in the area of women's health is very important. Women after their pregnancy may have a lot of muscular problems that include pain in the back due to muscle stretching or weakness. Pain can also be due to the increased hormone secretion that relaxes the ligaments leading to pain in the back. Appropriate exercises are taught to the mother to reduce the pain. Preventive aspects to reduce the rate of recurrence of back pain are also taught to the individuals depending on the cause of pain.

These are the major roles of a Physical therapist in various conditions.
