As we all know, there are two types of personalities. They are Type A and Type B. Two cardiologists Meyer Friedman and Ray Rosenman (1959), were the first to identify and describe the Type A personality. The story goes that in the mid-1950s, an upholsterer who was recovering the waiting room chairs in Friedman's office noticed an odd wear pattern. He mentioned to Friedman that the chairs looked like new except for the front edges, which were badly worn, as if all the patients sat only on the edges of the chairs. Initially, this did not seem too important to Friedman. However, he later came to believe that this chronic sense of time urgency, being literally "on the edge of your seat" was a possible contributing factor to heart disease and the hallmark of the Type A personality.

The characteristic of Type A personality is described as: a hard working, ambitious and aggressive personality traditionally thought to be a greater risk for heart disease, than other personality types. Also known as the Type A Behavior Patterns is a set of characteristics that include being impatient, excessively time-conscious, insecure about ones status, highly competitive, hostile and aggressive while being incapable of relaxation. They are often high achieving workaholics who multi-task, drive themselves with deadlines, and are unhappy about the smallest of delays. Because of these characteristics, Type A individuals are often described as "stress junkies". Here are some symptoms to look for when determining your personality type. Look for an intrinsic or insufficient level of self-esteem, which is considered to be the root cause of the syndrome. This is believed to be covert and therefore less observable. Another symptom is time urgency and impatience, which causes irritation and exasperation. The last symptom is free floating hostility, which can be triggered by even minor incidents.

Type B individuals, in contrast, are described as patient, relaxed and easy going. There is also a Type AB mixed profile for people who cannot be clearly categorized. Also associated with the Type B Personality is that their temperament is characterized by moderate ambitiousness, and drive. They have an accommodating attitude, cooperativeness, focus on quality over quantity and in general, an easy going approach to life.

In addition to Type A and Type B personalities, other personality patterns may affect the way we respond to stress. Have you ever wondered how some people survive in the face of great tragedy and stress? It's because of their personality type. Some people have a certain hardiness about their life in general, a resilient stream of ambition and hope.

In conclusion to this article, if your are experiencing a lot of pressure, strain and tension in your life, step back for a moment to realize how you contend and manage life's struggles. The way you cope with your pressure is directly linked to the type of personality that you keep control over.
