This is an article that may be a surprise to many people. In this article, I will be telling how pain is very important. For those of you who have suffered different types of aches and pains, this article may be a bit helpful knowing that it is pain you have and not a lack of pain.

A great Leprologist Dr.Paul Brand has written a book with the same name- ‘Pain: The gift of God'. If you have ever seen a patient affected by Leprosy, you will understand what I am talking about in this article. Patients who have had Leprosy usually lose the sensation of their hands and feet. This is because of the nerve damage that has occurred in their body.

The nerve damage can lead to loss of sensation in their hands and/or feet. This loss of sensation has been the death knell of the family life of many a person. The loss of sensation may cause wounds on the hands or feet of these people. The wounds may get infected leading to amputation where the hands or feet have to be surgically removed to save the rest of the limb or life of the patient.

When the patients suffer this way, the family of the patients especially in the developing countries shuns the affected person. This is because of the stigma attached with Leprosy. So now the patient with Leprosy has lost both the family and the function of his hands and legs. This is not a thing of the past. Even today, the stigma attached to Leprosy remains and people become destitute.

Though these patients become destitute and are shunned by their own family, the health care providers in various Leprosy institutions care for them. These people think of these institutions as their first home. The situation is very pathetic with each of the persons affected by Leprosy having a story about their tragic life.

In this context when we think that pain is the gift of God, we really can understand the true meaning of the words. Since we are able to feel the pain, we are able to protect our hands and feet. When the pain sensation is lost, there is a high risk of getting injuries. Though this can happen in all nerve injuries and even diseases like Diabetes, the stigma attached to Leprosy remains. This causes an indelible mark on the psyche of the patient leading to various emotional and psychological problems. All because they did not feel the sensation of pain.
