Outsourcing risks: Loss of personal data, Stolen identity, ID theftBY: Tim | Category: Others | Post Date: 2008-10-02
The biggest risks which a company takes while outsourcing some of their operations are concerns about the loss of personal data of their customers or employees. This is not necessarily about outsourcing risks to countries like India, China, Philippines, Mexico etc .. sensitive personal data can be lost even in the home country or even in another developed country. These companies should ensure they follow excellent security practices to eradicate this issue of identity theft and data breaches. Lets be very clear, I am not trying to exaggerate this issue of personal data theft and there is a very low loss of data as a result of outsourcing so far. But as more and more companies outsource their operations, the the outsourcing outfit itself using services of other companies, this problem is likely to detoriate in future. Another big issue is enforcement, the laws of each country are different and if a loss of personal data happens there may not be enough the parent company can really do. They can at most send a team and verify if the outsourcing operations are suitable or less risky. I am not anti-outsourcing but I think its good in terms as it helps reduce business costs, at the same time in the rush to make things happen they often overlook the security aspects which can lead to identity thefts. There have been times when call center employees of a different country were busted selling personal data of people when they were offered cash. These days the storage devices are becomming smaller in size, a modern day laptop or a memory stick can hold enormous data. If this device is misplaced, stolen or hacked then there is a huge data breach. The concept of outsourcing is not new, just that more and more core operations are being outsourced creating a risk for more number of identity thefts. To battle the problem of data theft in United States people should check their credit histories for free every year from all 3 major credit bureaus. Our country leaders should have a better security mechanism instead basing everything on Social Security Numbers (SSN) and Date of birth. Every day several people become a victim of identity theft, even though outsourcing is not the only, it is one of the major factor.
