Oscar awards - Long coveted statuette for Indian film industryBY: JNLakshmi | Category: Entertainment | Post Date: 2008-10-01
Academy awards, widely known as Oscar award is the most popular and prestigious award presented annually in recognition of film industries excellence in cinematic achievements. For the films produced this year, the most glamours event, 81th Annual Academy Awards is to be held on 22nd February 2009 at Kodak theatre - Hollywood, California. Most Indians across the globe would be glued to the TV sets to watch the awards. Every year, Indians, are with great expectations to achieve this honour in the "Best foreign film" category. This film award remains elusive yet. The jury of Film Federation of India will discuss and come up with 1 entry every year, to be presented for the category and it is up to the Oscar association to qualify the film as the nominee in the "Best foreign film" category. India is one of the largest film producing country in the world. But, so far only 3 films have been nominated for the Oscar though we did not make it in the Oscar role of honour by winning the award. The three films nominated for the Oscars so far are- 1. "Mother INDIA" starring Nargis, Rajendra Kumar and Sunil Dutt 2. "SALAAM BOMBAY" by Mira Nair 3. "LAGAAN" starring Aamir Khan Long coveted statuette for Indian film industry Indian film industry has got brilliant artists, high tech film making equipments and the films that we make are of high caliber. Our performances are outstanding in terms of directorial excellence, concept of fine arts and costumes. We have still not got this coveted prestigious global recognition. What would be the reason? May be this? -Though India is producing large number of films, most of it are commercial box office hits category made for Indian audience. But going through the list of films that won in this category, it is all non-commercial cinema pertaining to a social or political problem of the day to day life. Indian makers should take a call of a balance between award oriented and commercial hit. -The other perception is that jury play the spoilsport. My personal opinion is that movies like Devdas, Jeans or Paheli cannot not be even considered as Indian entry. -concepts like sudden song sequence, that too shot in a total different foreign location, seperate comedy track, all these does not go with international audience. -The other reason would be, we do lot of re-make. May be it gets rejected because of being a copy of a foreign source. There has to be something new to catch the show. One of the reason that the great movie "Naayagan" was not nominated is that it inspired "Godfather" - Or may be it has to be ethnic as it worked for 'Mother India' and 'Lagaan' Our Oscar achievements so far- Satyajit ray, has won honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement for his outstanding contribution to film industry. Bhanu athaiya shared an oscar with john mollo for the movie 'Gandhi' in costume design category One interestingly noticeable info is that movies of Kamal Haasan one of the famous, innovative actor from South India, has been nominated as India's entry at the academy awards for 6 times for the movies swathi muthyam, nayagan, thevar magan, kurudhi punal, Indian, Hey ram. It is also worth mentioning that in the movies like shrek, which won Oscars under various categories has lot of technical experts of Indian origin behind it. Vanitha Rangaraju-Ramanan native of Trichy, living in California won an Oscar for her technical work in the animation movie Shrek in 2002. It is always special, memorable one to win the "world cup - criket" likewise winning this award would give global exporsure and recognition to Indian film industry. The film maker and the country as a whole, gets hugely excited when their movie is officially sent to the Oscars. For this year, 'Taare Zameen Par' which is Aamir Khan, directorial debut has been selected as India's entry in the foreign language category for the Oscars. Well, let us hope that this Indian movie would proudly march all the way to Los Angeles and return home with with the greatly desired statuette.
