The condition of a persons teeth and gums can affect the whole health. Strong teeth are also needed to eat foods like nuts, maize, fruits and meat. Eating these foods is important to maintain good health. Proper oral hygiene will also help in keeping bad breath away. There are methods of cleaning the teeth properly to maintain oral hygiene.

Methods of maintaining healthy teeth and gums:

1. Brushing the teeth regularly, preferably twice a day will keep the teeth hygienic.

2. After each meal, the mouth should be rinsed thoroughly to make sure that no bits or pieces of food particles are present.

3. Avoid eating snacks in between meals.

4. The gums can be kept healthy if the mouth is rinsed with warm salt water every day.

5. A regular and periodic check up with a dentist is necessary for good oral hygiene.

There are also certain methods of cleaning the teeth. Following this method will help in cleansing the teeth in a better way and also prevent caries and other such problems of the teeth.

1. Soft toothbrush is necessary. A hard toothbrush has the potential to damage the gums.

2. The back of the teeth as well as the front has to be cleaned to maintain proper oral hygiene.

3. All sides of the teeth should be cleaned. Special attention should be given to the tops and sides of the teeth where the grooves are present.

4. A circular motion should be used while using the brush to clean the teeth.

5. The brushing should not be done very hard as this has the potential to damage the teeth.

In spite of all the care for the teeth, there are chances of tooth decay and other such problems occurring. This can appear even in children and babies. The teeth become painful and can become darker in colour. It can also lead to infection of the gums and early loss of teeth. To prevent this condition from occurring in babies and children and maintaining oral hygiene, there are a few things that needs to be done.

1. Breastfeeding rather than bottle feeding will decrease this problem

2. Sweet tea, sugar water and fruit juice can lead to early damage of the teeth of children.

3. A baby's teeth and gums should be cleaned after every meal. This should be done from the time the first tooth appears.

These are the simple methods of caring for the teeth and maintaining oral hygiene.
