Obama: The downside!BY: Abhi | Category: Politics | Post Date: 2009-12-14
The Obama presidency could be well considered as the breakthrough event that marked the death of white hegemony and opened up opportunities for the world but what the nation that is subject to his rule feels about it may well be different. Certainly the Americans voted him in but that does not exonerate the chances of anti-Obama-ism. As I was seated in the sofa of the National Library, India with a journal that I picked from the bookshelf nearby, I noticed I noticed a few foreigners; my hunch said they were apparently Americans. Now, that periodical had totally to do with the American President Mr Barack Obama. Two reactions showed on their faces - unacquaintedness, which is most likely given the unavailability of state-of-the-art facilities in the library that is believed to be a tourist spot for foreigners. The other reaction emerged the moment they caught a glimpse of the cover page of the journal which was obviously facing them and had Obama's picture emblazoned on it. This reaction was rather scornful, more bitter and less gratifying. One might argue that since Obama had a competitor obviously there would be people who rebuff him but there's more to it. A strong anti-Obama group persists in USA which clearly hates to digest that Obama is Islam, the religious group which sounds peril to America. Eligibility issues were raked up; trying to prove Obama is ineligible - that wasn't long ago. Obama has opened the world of opportunities for the nations of the world and has the best interests of the Americans in mind unquestionably. India was seen to be gainful for reasons not unknown to many, there is a flip-side to that too, India also posed a threat in this. Coming back to Barack, in BBC, lately, a journalist was quoted as saying -He is not worshipped here either-, responding to the statement that Obama was not worshipped in China. Obama was greeted with severe criticism and questions were raised as to what made him win the Nobel Peace Prize. Wall Street Journal, amongst many others carped about this. Obama also invited reproach when he skipped meal with the royal recently. Obama's use of ‘war' in his speech at the event when he was conferred with the ‘peace' prize was detrimental to his peace loving approach. That he keeps on sending troops to Afghanistan was talked about in bad taste too. His economic policy did face little disapproval too. The Copenhagen climate conference did not go down well with India, a sheer lack of understanding and negotiation failure. He is sure not the panacea for the world's problems and that will be reasserted soon enough.
