The term peptic ulcer means that there is erosion of the mucosal lining of the alimentary canal that may come into contact with the gastric juice. The peptic ulcers are commonly seen in the duodenum part of the intestine, but it can also be found in other parts of the intestine like oesophagus, stomach or jejunum.

Nutritional considerations for people suffering from peptic ulcers:

The person affected by peptic ulcer is usually asked to eat a bland diet.
Bland diet actually means that the food that is given is not an irritant. It will not cause any mechanical, thermal or chemical irritation to the stomach and the intestine. This kind of generalized diet is now not being adhered to. Each patient is analyzed and the diet plan for the individual is made out according to the requirements of the person.

Diet guidelines for people suffering from peptic ulcer:

1. Diet:
The patient can take a bland diet or a non bland diet, but the important factor to be considered is that the person affected by this condition should know the importance of each kind of the food that is required. The individual should also know the required amount of various nutrients that he or she has to eat. Then they should ensure that they are eating the adequate amount of the particular nutrient.

2. Variety: The food that the individual is required to eat should be selected from a wide range of foods. If the individual is given only a particular type of food that is bland, the person may feel more difficult to adhere to the diet pattern and may start eating food that is not good for peptic ulcers.

3. Seasonings: Moderate amount of seasonings can be added to the food to flavor the food to make it more palatable. This will again ensure compliance to the diet to treat peptic ulcers.

4. Snacks: Snacks in moderate amounts can be eaten, but these snacks should be very rich in protein. This will ensure earlier healing of the peptic ulcers. High protein diet has been found to have a healing effect on ulcers.

5. Eating out: The easiest method of preventing peptic ulcer from occurring is to avoid eating out. Eating at home is very important, as this will be healthier. People who eat out regularly are at a higher risk of getting peptic ulcer or worsening an existing peptic ulcer.

6. Diet plan: The diet plan should be made in consultation with the patient. Each person suffering from peptic ulcer is a unique individual. Each one may have a different eating pattern. This can lead to varying advice that needs to be provided. The diet plan should also take into consideration the economic level and cultural practices of the individual suffering from peptic ulcers.

7. Foods should be eaten slowly and also chewed well. This will make sure that the digestion occurs easily and the food does not have time to cause irritation and damage to the intestines.

8. Foods: The foods of choice that is beneficial in treating and healing a peptic ulcer are: Cereals, legumes, pulses, vegetable soups, potato, milk, egg, meat, fish, fruits and other similar foods.

9. Foods to avoid: Foods that should be avoided to prevent worsening of the condition of a peptic ulcer are condiments, spices, pappads, chutneys and pickles and other such foods.

This will help to ensure that the diet will prevent peptic ulcer and also to reduce the severity of a peptic ulcer.
