Nobel Prize, Oscar Award - criterion - America??BY: Abhi | Category: Politics | Post Date: 2009-10-09
Is it necessary to be related to America somehow to be conferred with awards like Nobel Prize and Academy Awards? What made Obama get the Nobel Peace Prize? Because he is America's president? Because he has not gone the way his predecessor (George W Bush) went? Because he is the leader of the nation which is dealing with two wars simultaneously? Does, not practicing violence mean he/she is a follower of non-violence? Obama had said recently that his guru is Mahatma Gandhi and termed him as the only possible person capable of inspiring him. While Gandhi was overlooked when it came to conferring him with the Nobel honor despite the fact that he was nominated as many as five times, what did his follower (Obama) do to qualify for the Nobel honor? Alfred Nobel said, the award should go to -the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for holding the promotion of peace- At this point of time perhaps we find no person other than Obama who fits the bill (to be a nominee only). However, it is not deemed fit to confer the award to a non-deserving candidate only for the reason that there is no other better contender. Did you know the Nobel Prize for peace was not awarded to any person in 1948, since there was no one fit for the award? The committee declared -there was no suitable living candidate-. Gandhi was assassinated earlier that year. It is believed that he would have received the award had he been alive, since he was nominated that year too, the fifth time. Why was 2009 not a repetition of 1948? This brings us to the question of the title again. Does Obama's citizenship qualify him for the Nobel? Is it necessary to be somehow related to America, to receive an honorary award like Nobel Prize or Oscar award? Unless someone is very very exceptional, like Rabindranath Tagore or Satyajit Ray, the award has mainly gone to them. Would have ‘Slumdog Millionaire' won the Oscar had it not been directed by an American? Would have Amartya Sen won the Nobel Prize had he not been the Professor of economics at the Harvard University (USA) for so many years? Million dollar questions but all unanswered !
