I hate vegetables and fruits and my kids are the same way, we are meat lovers. We often joked about vegetarians as grass eating cows.. (not anymore). During my last doctor's visit, he recommended me to get my cholesterol checked. I know my cholesterol would be on a higher side but to our surprise it came out to be extremely high, next day I got a call from my doctor's office and there it was .. an eye opening lesson from my doctor (It indirectly said .. "change yourself or die soon"). I am personally a non-caring attitude kind of a person, but when my doctors told that I am passing the same bad manners to my children I was very concerned. I was told not to quit my heavy meat diet altogether, but basically watch what I eat. I was also handed over some kind of food pyramid from the doctor about healthy eating. So I did some analysis which has been written below.

National Institutes of Health recommends each individual to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. I had not been taking much of any. It was kind of relatively easy to convince myself to follow a proper diet plan ( and "somewhat" become a grass eating cow myself), but how do I tell my kids, they hate fruits and vegetables.

There are several reasons why most kids in all western countries do not like veggies:
1. Meat is tasty:
Yes, it is loaded with salt, often fried and smells really good, thats why we all like it. Veggies on the other hand may be sound boring. Meat is full of fat and cholesterol (especially red meat). Chicken, turkey and fish are still better.

2. Sugar:
Chocolates, candies, cakes and pies, all are basically loaded with sugar, and it's tasty. Fruits are neither salted, not as sweet as sugar and definitely not oily.

3. Childhood mistakes:
Most kids who love vegetables is because they've had them since they were little. Kids who have been brought up that way crave for fruits automatically.

4. Cook at home:
Home cooked food is very healthy, but in our daily life we do not have patience or time for that. We would rather get a sandwich, soda and fries and sit on our couch and watch TV.

5. Fruits are costly:
Yes, they tend to be costly too .. so what there is a price for all good things in life.

6. Media:
We see commercials for chips, ice creams and fast foods, when was the last time you saw an Ad which promotes eating fruit or a vegetable (NEVER). We get brainwashed to only think about tasty food over healthy food.

Eating veggies does not always mean eating salad leaves .. Try making some friends who are basically vegetarians and they will truly help to extract the fruit and vegetable lover inside you. I have been able to change some of the habits of my kids, but my guess is if you teach your children to eat fruits and vegetables from childhood, it's better.
