Arthritis is a condition that is associated with loss of function and pain. The loss of function occurs because of the inability of the person to walk or do the daily activities. The loss of function itself could directly be because of the arthritic changes which are the degeneration of the edges of the bones. The loss of function could also be due to the pain itself.

When there is severe pain, the individual may not want to do any work to protect the part so that there will be no further pain. This causes the individual to avoid using the part of the body that can further cause the loss of function.

There are different types of arthritis and each of these types of arthritis can be caused due to various factors. There are some causes that are very common in all types of arthritis. The most common causes that can make a person to have arthritis are:

1. Genetic predisposition:

There are certain groups of people who have the chance of getting arthritis because of the genetic predisposition. These people have a great chance of getting the disease. One of their parents or grandparents may have had the disease and so they too are likely to get the condition.

2. Age:

The age of the individual is a major factor when one considers the chance of getting arthritis. This is because as a person gets old, the chance of getting arthritis increases. This could possibly be because of the fact that the bones degenerate automatically in a person who is old.

3. History of any previous injury:

There are many people who would have had some kind of injury to the bones or joints some time in their life. These people are more likely to get arthritis because when these injuries occur, they do not heal completely. They may also not heal without a scar. These reasons cause the person to have the joint prone to get arthritis, especially osteo arthritis.

4. The weight of the individual:

The weight of the individual also plays a major role in the chance of a person getting arthritis. This kind of arthritis that is caused due to excessive weight is also called as osteo arthritis. The excess weight of the person is transmitted through the various bones of the body and this causes the bones to degenerate early, leading to arthritic changes and causes arthritis.

5. Other causes:

There are also various other causes that can cause arthritis in a person. There are certain infections of the bone or the other tissues in the body that can cause the individual to have arthritis. One of the examples of this kind of arthritis is septic arthritis. It causes sepsis in the joint and can ultimately lead to arthritis. Certain crystal depositions like the deposition of Calcium oxalate in certain joints can cause arthritis in those joints.

These are the various causes of arthritis. Arthritis should be adequately treated early to prevent the loss of function and also to decrease the pain in the people affected by this condition.
