It is very natural and expected that your mood gets changed, based on the good or bad news that you receive. Losing your temper when kids at home eat your brain or your subordinate did not finish the work, that will have huge impact in your delivery of work, is all common too. Within 24 hours in a day, a person experiences mood swing. You may feel happy and great in the morning, but over the evening you may become restless and angry. Person's personality changes very quickly. Climatic conditions too affect your mood. You may be too irritated on a terribly hot day. You may feel lethargic, kind of moody during peak winter. These changes in mood may be bothersome but it does not disrupt our lives. When a person experiences extreme or abrupt fluctuations in mood for no reason, then it is mood swing. Mood swings generally refer to rapidly changing emotional states from euphoria to depression. From the definition, A mood swing describes a notable change in immediate behavior that is not the result of an external stimulus and that appears contrary to the person's normal personality. Causes: The abrupt variation the mood may be due to chemical imbalances in the brain. When ever a person experiences mixed feelings brain releases several chemicals. It is the release and re-absorption of these chemicals that impacts on how a person feels. Hormonal changes and imbalances in a person's body are responsible for these emotional whirlwinds-Mood swings. Quiet often, the mood swings are alleviated once the hormone levels have returned to normal. Symptoms: Many of the symptoms that occur with mood swings are similar to the symptoms found in depression. - Loss on interest - Feeling inferior - Feel of guilt - Sleep disorders - Lack of concentration - Fatigue - Physical ailments such as headaches, chronic pain or digestive disorders - Change in eating habits, weight Men and Women experience mood swing Due to their anatomy, women are more susceptible to mood swings than men, rather it is twice for women than men. Enormous change in the hormones happen in women during puberty, pregnancy, premenstrual cycle, menopause. It is quiet common that they experience this mood swings during those times. This is also seen during problems like thyroid, diabetics. Men also undergo mood swings as they age. Though it is not monthly as the women do, most men experience mild or moderate mood swings. They act out their inner turmoil. Men having diabetics, alcoholic also experience this. Treatment & Recovery In most cases a combination of psychological and physical treatments are the best options to manage mood swing disorders. There are a few simple things that you can do to help yourself feel more in control. - Identify when you are experiencing intense emotion. Recognize the situation of stress and put them on hold for a while. Relax and take control. - Go for a walk, exercise 3 days a week. It will also help you to overcome sleeplessness. - Schedule rest and joy time - Eating balanced nutritional diet can boost your brain, helping you to feel more upbeat and energized. Omega 3 supplements especially fish oil capsules are helpful in controlling sudden mood changes in both men and women. Walnuts, pineapple, plum, tomatoes, eggplant may help lift the mood. - Talk to people. Avoid loneliness. - Alternative therapies like meditation, yoga, acupuncture may be helpful in fighting off mood swings Mood swings are normal and depression is appropriate at times, but an out of balance biochemistry can cause mood swings and depression to become so extreme that they interfere with normal activities. If mood swings last more than two weeks, or if they seem unusually frequent, it's probably time to seek the help of a professional. Responsibility for treating mood disorders commonly is assigned to psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, counselors and general health care sectors.
