Methods of preventing fire accidents at home and reducing risk

Fire accidents are one of the common reasons of death in household accidents. There can be many types of fires in homes. The use of various chemicals, increased use of various electrical appliances in many activities is some of the reasons for fire accidents. These fire accidents can be prevented by taking certain simple precautions.

Reducing the risk of fires can be done by modifying certain things in the house. Every house should try to take these precautions as it can save both life and property. These methods of preventing fire are very simple with very little modifications needed.

Methods of preventing fire

1. Keep cooking fires enclosed:

Cooking fires are the most common causes of fire disasters. People who cook in small stoves are more at risk because of the exposed fire. Children are more at risk from these fires. The person who cooks is also at risk of being burnt.

2. Keeping matches away from children and also keeping children away from fires:
Children do not know the seriousness of fire and so they may play with dangerous things like matches and even a fire or candles. These are the most common causes of fire accidents. Children are more vulnerable to fire accidents than adults because they do not know the danger and they do not fear fire.

3. Keep fire extinguishers or sand in a bucket:
In houses it may not be possible to have water sprinklers to put out fire in case of fire accidents. This is the reason why bucket with sand or a small fire extinguisher will come in handy in houses.

4. Flammable materials:
Every house may need flammable materials like kerosene, petrol and other chemicals for various needs. These flammable materials should be kept out of the house as these can multiply the extent of disaster in case of a fire.

5. Safe electrical equipments:
In the recent years, electrical equipments and wires have increased the number of fire accidents. They are slowly overtaking the number of cooking accidents to become a leading cause of fire accidents. Faulty connections, sub standard electrical appliances, overloading a single socket with many types of electrical equipment are also common causes of fires. Avoiding such things can help to make the house fire proof.

6. Do not install switches where they can get wet:
Short circuit and fire accidents occur when a live wire comes into contact with water. So avoiding such contact can prevent fires.

7. Earthing:
All electrical lines must be properly installed and earthed. This will also minimize the risk of fire accidents.

8. Smoke detectors:
To prevent the risk of fires, smoke detectors can be installed in houses. This will help to identify the presence of even a small fire and it can prevent the fire disaster multiplying to dangerous proportions and causing damage to more life and property.

These are some of the simple measures that can prevent the risk of fire in houses. Adequate precautions will save lives that are the main goal of any fire prevention methods. The risk of fire hazards can be reduced to a great extent by these methods.
