Contact casts are very helpful in preventing injuries to an existing wound. There are many people around the world who benefit form using total contact casts. Though the contact casts used in many situations are very costly, there are a few simple methods and steps in which a very cheap contact cast can be made. This is as effective as the one that is got from a company. At the same time, the cost of making these are very very less.

These kinds of contact casts can be used in developing countries and also in various field conditions where the people will benefit. This article explains the various steps involved in making the contact casts. It is a simple method and people can learn it easily.

The first thing that has to be done is to take the bandages that are in 6 inch or 4 inch rolls. These rolls can be starched. When they are starched, they will become more stiff. This is the base on which the production of the plaster rolls are made. Once the bandages are stiff after the starching process in which the starch is mixed in water and boiled. The bandages are dipped in this starch solution and then dried in the sun. This will make the bandages to be stiff.

The next step that needs to be done is to get plaster powder that is available. This plaster of Paris powder can be got in many hardware shops. This powder is then spread over the bandages that are made into a roll. Now the roll of the starched bandage has plaster of Paris powder spread over it.

This plaster roll is now like a readymade roll that is helpful to make the total contact casts. This is a very simple method of making a roll of plaster bandage that can be used in all plaster applications or total contact cast applications. There are so many advantages of using this made to use plaster. The most important one is the minimal cost of the bandages.

The minimal costs of these bandages are useful in treating many people from the lower socio economic category people especially in countries where there is no health insurance available. These people in those countries have to pay for their treatment from their pockets. So the minimal cost of these plasters will benefit these people.

The disadvantage of these plaster rolls is that the rolls can be very heavy as compared to the readymade ones when applied. Tough this is a disadvantage, since the cost is more than one fifth of the readymade plaster; people prefer this to the costly plasters. There is another disadvantage and this is that the plaster or the total contact cast made from these plasters takes a longer time to set than the plasters that are bought from the shops. This can be a advantage too because when they take a longer time to set, the plaster can be molded even slower than the other ready made plaster.
