Almost 50% of the people around us have pets and many of these pets are dogs. This may be due to the reason that dogs are mans best friends and the dogs have always been the most loved pet. There are people with other kind of pets too, but dogs have their special place among pets. There are many people who breed dogs and many have dogs that give litters and the puppies are sold or given away to friends.

It is very difficult in the initial days to know if your dog is really pregnant, but as time goes by it becomes very easy to identify the dog's pregnancy. This is because the dog has many obvious changes that make one to know that the dog is pregnant. In the earlier stages, it is very difficult to identify if the dog is pregnant. Though it is difficult, it is not impossible. This article will help the dog lover to learn the simple methods of knowing if the dog is pregnant or not.

The dog in heat:

The first thing that every person who owns a dog should know is when the dog was in heat. This is because if the person knows when the dog was in heat, it would be easy to know if the dog is pregnant. This is because the usual time of pregnancy is about 60 to 64 days which is about two months. The owner of the pet should also know if and when the dog was mated last. This will also make the person realise if the dog is pregnant.

Change in the behaviour:

The next simple method to learn if your dog is pregnant is to notice if the dog is having any change in the behaviour. Usually the dog that is pregnant will have a less jumpy nature and likes to sleep more than was usual. The dog will also like to be touched less. This is because the dog that is pregnant will be having certain mood changes and this will make it resent the touch of people. This is especially true when you try to touch the belly of the dog.

Changes in food habits:

The next important method of identifying if the dog is pregnant is to notice the changes that can be seen in the food habits. The dog that is pregnant will be seen to have a mild dip in the amount of food that is eaten by the dog. This is only for the period in which the dog is in early pregnancy. As the dog approaches full term, it will start eating more.

Change in the structure of the dog:

This is another important method of identifying if the dog is pregnant. This is because the dog will surely put on more weight. This weight is usually because of the puppies inside the dog. In the later stage of the dog's pregnancy, the stomach of the dog can be palpated and movements can be felt inside. The nipples will also become larger and secrete fluid.

These are the various methods of identifying the dog's pregnancy, but the best method is to take the dog to a vet for confirmation.
