Measuring Success - Happiness and SuccessBY: Ms Royce | Category: Self Improvement | Post Date: 2008-07-19
What is the definition of success? Quite simply it depends. Do you mean; business success, successful women and men, successful marriages or relationships, successful families, social success, financial success, or do you mean a successful career? A success story fro on person will differ greatly from a success story of another individual. How we view the world will depend on how we define success. Success can mean different things to different people. One person may value a career over relationships. A success story regarding a professional achievement will mean more to them than someone who has a successful family life. This of course may change over time. as we go through life success and our goals change. If you do not know what your goals are, then how will you know when you have achieved them? Success is about moving towards what your ultimate goal is. Once the goals are set, then the hard work begins in order to reach those goals. Success comes in all different shapes and sizes with one common denominator and that is success is important and it takes work to reach. Success does not always have to involve money. There are millions of people in the world who may not have money but they are happy and hence successful in themselves. Money alone cannot measure success. Does the person who has money feel fulfilled and at peace with themselves? The answer to this question will determine whether or not success has been attained. There is no better gratification than being successful. Success is a journey, not a destination, and only achieved when a stretch goal is met overcoming problems and difficulties by conscious effort and by application of capabilities, resources and methods. It is to be differentiated from luck, chance and doing what comes naturally without effort. Be careful of gauging success by how much money you make. There is another way of measuring financial success. Ask yourself; "How do you use your earnings to improve the quality of your life, your self-worth, and the lives of others?" Be ambitious. Ambition is a description of the drive to be excellent. Defining success for yourself takes time. So be patient. Success should be determined by effort. If you give your best effort, you should be satisfied. Your best effort may not always result in the most desired outcome, but you must learn to live with that. You should define success in terms of your effort and not in terms of the outcome of your effort. Your effort is internal; its within your control. The outcome of your effort isn't' it's external. You should never spend your time worrying about what's never in your control in the first place. This is not an easy lesson to learn. In fact, I still struggle with it at times. But I always try to remind myself that I need to approach things from a perspective that sees success as internal and outcome as external. In conclusion to this article, success is getting what you want, and happiness is wanting what you get.
