Marriage: Is it safe to marry a Software Engineer amid IT SlowdownBY: Bharat | Category: Relationships | Post Date: 2008-10-15
Due to frequent ups and downs of the stock market and economy, there has been a growing concern especially among the parents of a girl (bride) these days, whether or not to get their daughter married to a Software Engineer. It is totally wise to understand their point of view since they do now want that a few months later their son-in law gets laid off / loses his job. Let me clarify, computer programming is still the best career and well paying sector compared to any other profession in general. Software development is not going anywhere from India in the foreseeable future. Atleast, the future for the next 10-15 years looks good. Current slowdown is just a temporary phase, similar to the year 2000 slowdown when stocks crashed and some software engineers lost jobs. This article is my personal opinion and I am not recommending you to get your daughter married to a software professional or not, but I am just making you aware of a much larger picture. Software engineering profession is a high paying medium risk profession. Media tends to highlight problems in software more than anything because everyone in India is just interested in Software and nothing else. Bad news about software industry are a sensation and their impact is often overstated by media. Yes, there is a risk of job loss in a short term but if the guy has done engineering for a good institute like Regional engineering colleges and IIT's, I think he has a good long term future. Lets come to the point directly, is it ok to marry my daughter to a software engineer or not. I would say, Yes! To be additionally secure, I think that both husband and wife should work, like if husband is a software engineer, wife should also work as a teacher, bank employee or a government job. The idea being one is in a High paying-medium risk profession while another partner is in a Medium paying-low risk job. This combination works out to be the best. During the slow times it is wise to watch your spending and keep savings for atleast next 3-6 months. History shows that economy always recovers eventually, therefore current layoffs in software is not a reflection what is not going to always happen in future. These good and bad phases keep comming. Good qualified and intelligent professionals who get laid off do get a new job after a while ( if not immediately). If the family or guy or girl is financially strong, there is no reason to worry anyways because the newly married can always get a little help from their parents for a short time if needed at all. No profession in private industry is safe, you must have heard about layoff's in Airlines industry which was until recently considered the most secure profession. Infact the layoffs in Airline industry percentage wise far exceeds than we have ever seen in software. Similarly if you get your girl to a businessman, there is always a risk how he will do in a long run. With privatization of sectors, there is no guarantee of jobs anymore, this is the survival of fittest kind world. It is very common in foreign countries like US and UK to lose your job and they be jobless for a few weeks or months and they get a job again. Unfortunately in India the Social Stigma is too huge is someone looses the job, people think we though this guy was intelligent, but he must be an idiot to get laid off. Most intelligent people in the world like research scientists can also face layoff. Few things are just beyond one's control. If you are someone who just wants your daughter to fully shielded from all problems in life (basically your risk appetite is too low), well then marrying your daughter to not just software engineer but anyone in private profession is risky. You really see if the boy is well educated, has studied from a good institute, his personality, Masters or not and many other things should be considered to make a right judgement. Getting married to a well established doctor is probably a good combination of high paying and low risk profession. But honestly, the time it takes to complete a medical studies and then getting established as a good doctor takes time. Most government jobs are considered safest even though they are low paying. Or you best best is to marry your daughter in a really affluent family who have money to support generations.. good luck.
