Rarely do I visit my native "Mangalore". When the bus crosses coorg border and enter into my village Sampaje, The greeneries and the nature there bring me the sweet memories of my childhood (in Mangalore). The forest there was the place where I used to go and collect the firewood, along with brothers and friends. In the grounds at the that forest, we used to play cricket with the ball made out of rubber tags stolen from the government maintained rubber plants over there and the bat made out of coconut tree branches. I used paint in the bats and used write the brand name MRF.

Even on the T-shirts my dad used to give me; I used to write the player names. Most of the mango trees could not keep its mango's until it becomes ripe. We all naughty boys used throw stones to it and we used steal it and we used to have it with the salt. Even we used climb the trees and grab the mangoes like monkeys. Many times we broke the branches of the tree itself and even we fell down along with the branch when it breakdowns. I observe the street dogs are nowadays wandering freely. It was not so in our childhood. We used throw stones at the street dogs and used to get entertainment when they used cry -Kaiynn Kaiynn-. Many times the stones used to fall at the vehicles and we had tough time escaping from the vehicle owners. These are some unforgettable sweet memories of my childhood in Mangalore.

Even while going to school, we used to target the mango trees on the way. When teachers used to beat me for reaching late to the school, I used to curse the mango trees. But the next I was again throwing the stones at the trees. Our practice of jumping compounds and running across the hills made us good sportsmen at the schools. We used to invite the boys of neighbor villages to play cricket. If we win that's fine. Otherwise we used to quarrel them to take the revenge of it.

Around our cricket grounds, there were vegetable plants. We were innocent and use to steal the vegetables there to eat it. When the balls fall there, we use to demolish all the plants over there while searching for the ball. When I thing of those days, I feel sympathy on those poor farmers and I feel like giving compensation to them. The river Payaswini brings the memories of swimming and playing on the river. I used to catch the fish from the river, and we used to drop into a small pond at my home. I had the collection of about hundred fishes in that pond.

When I remember those days, I ask my self -Why did I grow up young?-.
