United States of America is one of the most developed nations of the present time. The views of people are progressive and the government is also focused on development. Though this is all true, there are a few facts that will make people of the present generation sit up and take notice. What I am talking about is the era of racial discrimination. During that period, there were many lynchings.

Lynching as such means that a person is murdered by the people of a town by taking the law in their own hands. Those who were murdered were stabbed, tied to a stake or hanged. Some were also burned. This kind of activity was peculiar to the United States. No other country had this act of lynching.

Thousands of people were lynched in the period after the Civil War between the South and the North. During the civil war, the Southern people who were having slaves were fighting against the Northerners who were against slavery. The Southern stated were badly beaten in the war.

In spite of being beaten, the destitute soldiers who were without homes and families after the war started certain organizations with the sole aim of avenging the defeat by punishing the African Americans. These White supremacist groups started inciting violence against the innocent African Americans. This racial discrimination was common in United States.

The African Americans were discriminated in all walks of life. They were made to work in the fields and were lynched on the flimsiest of reasons. The common reasons cited for the lynchings were asking the hand of a White lady in marriage, arguing with their white masters. They were also sometimes lynched for no reason at all.

This lynching was the height of discrimination on the basis of the color of the skin. Many people from the African American community fought against this injustice. Many bills were tabled in the House of Representatives, but most of them were voted against by the legislators from the South.

Finally after years of discrimination and various sufferings, there was hope as the number of lynchings decreased. In spite of this there were sporadic reports of lynchings taking place. One of the last lynching was that of Michael Donald who was lynched in 1981.

To know that after so many years of racial discrimination a person from the African American community has become the President of America shows the resilience of the African Americans. It also shows the changes for the better that have happened in the United States of America over the past several years.
