Light emitting designer clothes. (LED's)BY: Deena David | Category: Technology and Computers | Post Date: 2009-07-04
We are all used to the light in our living rooms and our bedrooms. Are we ready for the next generation clothing? These are the new kind of light emitting designer clothes that is being created. Researchers and business groups are trying to create the new kind of clothes that have Light emitting diodes or LED's as they are commonly known into the fabric. The LED's are put into the clothing without compromising the flexibility of the clothes. This makes them comfortable to wear. The cloth has to be highly soft, tactile and robust for it to be worn comfortably. The photonic textiles as these clothes are called, have a shiny fabric to diffuse the light. This helps to diffuse the light from the LED. This also helps in reducing the number of diodes that need to be used to produce the light. Prototypes of this kind of clothes have been pillows, backpacks that can emit light. They can also be connected to other electronic devices to flash messages or play music. This is the basic concept of light emitting designer clothes. Philips company has been the one that has brought out the prototype for this brand of textiles. As of now, the LED's are powered by AA batteries, but researchers hope that in future, they will be able to produce foldable batteries or those that can be incorporated into the fabric. The other choice would be to power the LED's with the electricity that can be generated by converting the heat produced by the body. Though the clothes that emit light are a novel idea, the market for these kinds of clothes may be limited. There is the choice of this kind of clothing to be used in fashion shows and other similar stages. There can be some specialized use for these clothes in the military, where there can be different groups dressed in different colored lighted clothes when they are doing simulation training for their cadets. The other factor that hinders the increased use of these clothes is the high cost of production that is associated with this. This may decrease once the research phase is over, and it is produced commercially. Wearing light emitting designer clothes can be fun especially in parties, fashion shows and many other events. In spite of their use in many aspects, there may be some problem in commercializing them till a different kind of hurdle is crossed. This is the big question of laundering the clothes. These clothes at this point of time are not dirt repellent. So there needs to be a method of cleaning these fabrics with all the electronic gizmos attached to them, without spoiling the circuits in the fabric.
