Life and times in Bangalore. Information about Bangalore city.BY: Oasis | Category: Others | Post Date: 2008-09-23
Being a defense kid, moving and adjusting to an entirely new place comes easily to my husband but for me it is an entirely different story. When my husband got a job in Bangalore, I had to quit my job, leave my friends and family and a familiar life in Delhi for an unknown place. Before coming to Bangalore, I spent two agonizing months talking to friends and surfing the internet to gather as much information as I can about the city and life here. But no amount of research I did could prepare me for the small facts and surprises that began to unfold once I landed here. The city, the people, the landscape, the lifestyle, the weather, the food, the language; Bangalore is different in all these aspects and more. The landscape: The first thing that strikes you as you see the city of Bangalore is its green surroundings. It is no less than a miracle that the city has retained its green cover even after bursting at seems due to huge influx of people from across the country in search jobs. Bangalore is called ‘The city of gardens' and for all the right reasons. Most of the neighborhoods have a park that is clean, well maintained and landscaped. Due to the Bangalore weather and plenty of rain that it receives, the public parks have a healthy green cover and are spotted with beautiful flowers. Also there are rules pertaining to opening and closing times, littering and plucking flowers that are followed by most. No vendors are allowed inside the park, neither can people take eatables inside. Bangalore also has plenty of natural and man made lakes and tanks that serve as scenic picnic spots and wonderful places to hangout. Ulsoor, KR Puram, Yellanallappa and Nagawara are some of the most beautiful and frequented lakes in Bangalore. These water bodies play an important role in keeping the city cool and congenial and also help in maintaining ground water table. During rains when the water levels rise some even have boating facilities. They add to the beauty and serve as a retreat in this ever growing city. The Weather: Bangalore enjoys a fantastic weather throughout the year. When most of the county is either melting in the summer heat or shivering in extreme cold, one can afford to take it easy here. There is no need for heavy woolens in winters or air conditioners in summers. The temperatures vary between a comfortable 17 to 36 degrees throughout the year with plenty of rainfall and low humidity levels. Warmest month: April Coldest month: January Rainy season: From July to September. Most favorable time to visit: October to February People and lifestyle: Simple living and high thinking is an adage apt for an average Bangalore dweller. At 85%, Bangalore's literacy rate is way above the national average and that of many major cities in India. In general people are soft-spoken and polite. Road rage and abusive behavior, which is a way of life on Delhi roads is non existent here. Bangalore has some of the best educational institutes in country. Bangalore University produces maximum number of doctors in India. Bangalore has produced the maximum international sportsmen in India for all sports ahead of even Mumbai & Delhi. The city has the highest number of engineering colleges in the world. It also has produced the maximum number of scientists considered for Nobel Prize nominations from India Although Kannada is the official language; English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil are widely spoken and understood. Industry and jobs: Bangalore is India's answer to Silicon Valley, and this is the city where most large software companies have set up shop and operate out of state-of-the-art facilities. The Government of Karnataka has also been extremely positive about the software and services marketplace and has helped create the relevant telecom and policy infrastructure conducive to the growth of this sector. The dynamic industrial policy declared in 1996, with comprehensive packages of incentives and concessions, has ensured a productive ground for various industries. The hardware and software industries have now brought about a revolution of sorts under these schemes. Various institutions and computer training centers have contributed to the large number of trained and talented professionals. On the whole there are a plethora of opportunities available for the right candidate in Bangalore. Recreation and hangouts: All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy therefore the locals give equal importance to recreation and their weekend getaways. Bangalore has a wide range of attractions. Whether it is historical monuments, religious places, parks, lakes, treks, museums et al, Bangalore has something for everyone. Some of the famous landmarks of Bangalore include: Vidhana Soudha, Tipu Sultan's Fort and Palace, Bangalore Palace, Venkatappa Art Gallery, Visweswaraiah Industrial & Technological Museum, Lalbagh Gardens, Cubbon Park, Bull Temple, Iskcon temple and Bal Bhavan. Some of the quick getaways around Bangalore include: Big Banyan Tree (Ramohalli), Nandi Hills, Vishwashanti Ashram, Shivaganga, Bannerghatta National Park, Savana Durga , Devarayanadurga. Sometimes Bangalore is also referred as ‘The city of pubs'. It has a thriving night life. Although one has to exercise caution when going out at night, Bangalore is relatively safe for women, so women can also go out and enjoy a social drink with friends. Some pubs of note are: NASA, Pecos, Purple Haze, Guzzlers Inn, Scottish Pub, Sparks, Spinn courtyard, Styx, Tavern at The Inn and The Eleven.
