Learn the simple methods of teaching good habits to your childBY: Deena David | Category: Family | Post Date: 2009-10-20
Children these days are very smart. In fact they seem to know much more than what we knew at their age. The reason for the increase in the knowledge is the fact that there are many more communication devices around them than what was around us when we were young. The kids are now constantly exposed to voices, languages and various other things through the television, internet and other communication devices. When the children are exposed to these, they are able to grasp more. This is the good news about the communication devices present around us. The bad news is that most of the information and other things that they are exposed to are not good. They learn almost all their bad habits from these devices that include television and internet. Friends only play a secondary role in the formation of bad habits in kids. The bad habits that are present in the kids have to be removed and this should be the primary aim of any parent. This article lists a few ideas that will help the parents to be able to teach good habits to their children and remove the bad habits. 1. Positive reinforcement: Whenever your child does something good, then try to reinforce that behavior with a word of praise. The reward can be more than a word of praise for exceptional good behavior which can be rewarded with some small gift or a play toy. This kind of positive reinforcement helps to mould the good habits into the child at a very tender age. The child should be made to understand that positive and good behavior is always rewarding. At the same time, care should be taken that the child does not manipulate you and use the good behavior to get the reward. 2. Negative behavior ignorance: All children will try to use negative behavior each day. These negative behaviors can vary. Some of the example of negative behavior of kids is shouting, screaming, rolling on the ground, kicking, biting, spitting and many more. Almost all of this negative or bad behavior can be associated to either attention seeking behavior or trying to make the parents to give in to the demand of the child. The best method of dealing with all these negative behavior by your kid is to just ignore the child. The child will try to get your attention, but when you ignore, then the negative habit and behavior will not be reinforced. Instead the child will slowly mend ways and realize that only positive behavior gets a reward and negative behavior is ignored. This will make the child learn the good habit and unlearn the bad habits. As parents, it will be very difficult to ignore the child when they are behaving badly, but when we try to correct the child forcibly, the child realizes that a bad behavior gets much more attention than a good behavior and will try to resort to it whenever it needs attention. This is the principle behind the formation of good or bad habits in a child.
