The earlier systems in the field of artificial intelligence could not act as problem-solvers completely. So the necessity for a thorough system to discover and solve the problem arose. It was gradually reformed several times and at last, the knowledge-base system we use today evolved. Knowledge means state of knowing some useful information. Intelligence helps to acquire knowledge. To make use of the knowledge, we should possess the ability of reasoning. We can say that true justified belief is also called knowledge. When the knowledge is used by systems to perform difficult tasks, it is known as knowledge base systems. The knowledge base system acted as an eye-opener in the field of artificial intelligence. The knowledge base system MYCIN was used to diagnose blood diseases. It is a good beginning and the scientists thought that knowledge base system can be used in the fields of medicine, science and technology to help the mankind. The scientists showed much interest in developing knowledge based system to help in the works such as problem recognition and solving, memory organization and general learning. The construction and refinement of knowledge base system was given much importance. The knowledge consists of rules, facts, concepts and theory. The concepts of thinking, learning, understanding, remembering and reasoning are adopted to acquire knowledge. By indexing method, the knowledge can be kept organized, as lot of facts and rules are required to perform the intended task. So, it is essential that the facts and rules should be available for easy location and retrieval. The knowledge is then grouped, as the search can be performed in that particular group instead of the whole memory. The frames should be linked in a network and each frame should contain closely associated information about an object and pointers to related object frames should be made easy for quick access of information. The expert knowledge has been coded into facts, rules, heuristics and procedures and they give the power to knowledge base systems to solve complicated problems. The knowledge base system thus help for searching the knowledge required, permits for alteration and bring it for ready to use. Some form of input will initiate a search for a goal or decision. In this process, searching and matching are important. This process has to be repeated several times until the required result is received. Since the knowledge base system is a combination of object oriented programming, fuzzy logic and associative network, development in any of these fields, will help for development of knowledge base system. Still research is going on to simplify the process and use effective methods to get the required result in the field of knowledge base systems. We may get knowledge from various sources. The validation of knowledge is another important thing. The knowledge should be error-free, complete in itself and consistent. We should develop the knowledge base system in such a way that it should search, compare and validate the data and give the expected result we require. Japan was showing much interest in developing knowledge base systems. The knowledge base system is a turning point in the field of artificial intelligence.
