After the successful start of Indian Premier League (IPL), now it is the time for the kick-start of Karnataka Premier League (KPL). There were huge investments in the Indian Premier League, and the sponsors made a good amount of profit. It was the domination of Industrialists and Bollywood stars in the sponsoring of Indian Premier League teams.

Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has decided to launch it's own version of 20-20 cricket. The ten zones in the fray are Mysore, Mangalore, Dharwad, Raichur, Tumkur, Shimoga, Bellary, Gulbarga, Belgaum and Bangalore, out of which 8 will be short listed. These 20-20 cricket matches are expected to be in the same format like IPL, but on a smaller scale. Most of teams have been bought by the politicians. Six out of ten teams are sponsored by the congress leaders. From the long time, sports were kept away from the politics. But these sponsorships of cricket teams by the political leaders may bring the politics in the sports too. At least there should not be the literal politics involved in the game. Instead game has to be played for the sake of game. The motto of the game should be giving the opportunity to the talents players, especially from the smaller towns and villages who never seem to get the opportunity. KPL would provide a platform for players from the districts to showcase their skills and break into the State ranks

About 40 cricketers will be divided among ten zonal teams: Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Dharwad, Raichur, Tumkur, Shimoga, Bellary, Gulbarga and Belgaum.

Eight franchises are as follows:
1. Brigade Enterprises (Bangalore Urban team)
2. Melmont Constructions Pvt Ltd (Bangalore Rural team)
3. Fiza Developers (Mangalore team)
4. Kupendra Reddy Series Auto Company (Mysore team)
5. Shamanoor Shiva Shankarappa and Jagannnath (Hubli-Dharwad team)
6. Vivid Creations (Gulbarga team)
7. Subash Publishers and Sangeeth Electronics Company (Belgaum team)
8. Jayaprakash Hedge (Shimoga team)

In Indian Premier League, most of the players were selected amongst the good performers at the International matches.Getting into IPL is tough for young cricketers from smaller towns because the player is expected to have performed atleast at interstate matches. So the state level Premier Leagues provide a platform to cricketers from towns and villages. We can only hope that the sponsors will keep up their words of giving opportunities to all good players, irrespective the political parties they support and irrespective of the religion they follow. If this concept can really be executed, there is no doubt that India would find very competitive cricket team, representing one billion people.

At one point, Bangalore had six national players at one team. The inaugural edition of eight-team T20 cricket tournament, on the lines of Indian Premier League (IPL) will be at staged at at Bangalore's prestigious Chinnaswamy stadium from September 12 to 27. . The concept of the tournament, however, has been questioned by Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath, both of whom hail from Karnataka.
