Is Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi loosing its true meaning?BY: Muhammed Haris | Category: Relationships | Post Date: 2009-08-12
Raksha Bandhan has been celebrated in India for centuries. It is a festival where a sister ties a band known as Rakhi around her brothers wrist and in return, the brother vows to protect her all through his life. The celebration of Raksha bandhan not only strengthens the love between the brother and the sister but also reminds us of our rich heritage and culture. These days the festival of Raksha bandhan seems to be loosing its true meaning. When a boy troubles a girl or a girl wants to get rid of some guy, she ties him a Rakhi. According to me this is a big insult to the festival, a Rakhi should be tied by a girl only if she loved a boy as a brother and not to just get rid of him. There are other ways to get rid of a boy for example by complaining to the police or to parents. In fact in the colleges Rakhi has been used for the same purpose. All the girls come with Rakhis on Raksha Bandhan to tie them to guys who bother them. Many guys bunk the classes on that day or they just hide from girls on Raksha bandhan. Rakhi day has become like a day of attacking the guys and breaking their heart in a diplomatic way. It is slowly becoming a terror day for the boys in college. There is no harm in making a brother and tying him a Rakhi but tying a Rakhi to mock at a boy or to get rid of him is wrong. Todays generation needs to understand the seriousness of cultures and understand their true meaning. Rakhi is hardly being tied to the actual brothers with whom they have to build a good relationship. Actual brothers are being neglected in home and Rakhi is being used on streets to safeguard themselves from the guys. So, there should be an awareness about respecting the most honored and unique Indian culture of tying Rakhi. Otherwise Raksha bandhan will loose its true meaning and Rakhi will no more be respected by the younger generations.
