When we think about Deepavali (or Diwali), the oil bath, new clothes, fireworks, sweets, fun and festivity come into our mind. Nowadays, the youngsters are loosing interest in celebrating festivals and all the other family members are also showing less interest due to this reason. That is why, the question arises whether Deepavali is loosing its charm.

In North India, Diwali is celebrated to denote the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana(the evil king). When Rama returned to Ayodhya, everybody welcomed him with full enthusiasm with illuminated diyas. Every year, on the day of Diwali, the Lakshmi puja is conducted and people used to buy new gold jewellery or silver coins. The people greet each other and exchange sweets. In South India, Deepavali marks the victory of Lord Krishna. When Naragasura was killed by Lord Krishna, he requested Krishna that this day should be remembered by all and Krishna permitted. Both the beliefs mark the triumph of good over evil.

The children of today, may not even know these stories. For them, Diwali is just a holiday. Well, they can enjoy this festival by getting up early in the morning, taking oil bath, wearing new clothes, firing crackers, eating sweets and having fun with friends. Nowadays, we see the charm of Diwali is getting reduced. The elders at home are also not getting interest in preparing varieties of sweets for that day. They simply purchase some sweets from sweet shops. Everybody wants to have a control on health and ready to eat less sweets only. In the olden days, the new clothes are purchased by everyone for Deepavali compulsorily and all the people will be waiting for the chance of doing shopping and selecting new designs. But, the standard of living has been increased and people buy new clothes as and when they require, purchasing new clothes has got no significance with the celebration of festivals now.

On the Diwali day, the elderly people only show interest in lighting diyas as youngsters are busy all the time. Greeting over phone and cell phone, sending greetings through email are the new trends of exchanging greetings by youngsters. All the other time, people seem to be clung with TVs to watch movies and special programmes, which are most of the time irrelevant with the festival. The deafening sound of Diwali crackers is also not seen much. It is in a way good, since small children only were engaged in the making of crackers. Moreover, the air is getting polluted by firing of crackers.

We can celebrate Deepavali with full enthusiasm as before, with slight changes. We can donate to the poor people whatever we can. The family get-togethers can be arranged to create the festival mood. We can limit the programmes watched in TV for one day and hear bhajans and slokas which are very well available on CDs and internet. We can light Diwali diyas with prayer for eradication of evils. The people who greet and receive greetings from others, both get the pleasure. So, don't forget to greet your nears and dears, in some way. Eat less sweet on Deepavali day but carry more sweet memories on that day.
