Internet addiction disorder: Overcome internet or computer addiction.BY: Jessica | Category: Self Improvement | Post Date: 2009-08-21
Internet has penetrated our lives so deeply that many of us unknowingly become hard-core internet addicts. People use internet for a wide variety of reasons send & receive emails, messaging, socialize, dating, talk, buy stuff, play online games, find information, make money, read news, online banking and so much more. We have started living two lives, one real life and another is online / virtual / internet life. Believe it or not, there are about 168 million registered domain names hosting trillions of pages. Internet as a whole has become an intrinsic part of our daily life and many of us do get Internet Addiction. What exactly is Internet addiction or Online Computer addiction: It is fairly normal to spend roughly an hour a day on the internet, it may be one time a day or several very short browsing sessions. Internet becomes an addiction when we repeatedly get the urge of going online for no apparent reason or a less important reason. These people may be browsing, and even exactly sure why they are online and what they are looking at right now. They get troubled because of small things on internet, totally unrelated to them or that are too insignificant. There can be all sort of cases. Internet addiction is a real thing, kids in particular get hooked faster to their computers then the grown-ups, but really anyone can get online addiction. How to overcome Internet addiction disorder: 1. Limit your computer or internet usage: Obviously, but approach may differ from person to person. It's best to limit your internet browsing for a total of 30 minutes a day and a maximum or 15 to 20 minutes per sitting. Fifteen minutes is actually more than enough one need to check emails, pay bills and read headlines. That's it, so looking for internet deals or chatting or playing .. all of it needs to come to an end. 2. Get rid of your laptop: Laptop can be carried around and you may be browsing the internet in front of your TV, your living room, you bedroom and even your bathroom. You know very well, desktops are not that comfortable and you have to sit in front of them instead of the luxury you get of carrying a laptop around, this will make your time on internet a bit boring. 3. Get a dial up connection: Do you want to give your internet addiction a big blow? Then get a slow speed connection, like a dial up. You will hate your time on the internet. If nothing else cut your home internet connection all together and use office or internet browsing shops whenever you want to go online. 4. Get a timer: Keep a timer that bothers you every 10 minutes whenever you log on to your computer, it atleast reminds you that you need to log off now. 5. Think about your health and your eyes: Sitting too much on a laptop or desktop, means lesser and lesser physical activity. People who use computer excessively very often develop back pain, neck pain, joint pains and starring screen for extended periods is extremely bad for your eyes. You may land up getting eye glasses or if you already wear then the power of your eye glasses can very well go up. 6. Make a list of good and bad things: In most cases, internet addiction is only about enjoyment and no work is actually being done. Besides health issues related to extended internet browsing, you need to look at other things - I get less time for other things, I have lesser friends now, I have become less social, I am getting obese, I am lost all the time etc .. Type this up and make it the wallpaper of your computer so that every time you use your computer, these messages are right on your face. 7. Tell a family member to nag you each time you use computer more than 10 minutes: There is a difference between a family member nagging you on their own, and you telling them to nag you. If you tell a family member to nag you, you will not feel bad because you yourself told them to do so. It really works an won't hurt your ego. 8. Find alternate sources of enjoyment: Go out and play, join a gym, do social/voluntary work, join a church and ask them how you can help them. There are several ways you can spend time in a more constructive way. Do not use TV or video games as an alternative because they are equally addictive and bad. 9. Break up with your online friends circle: Internet addicts tend to make other friends online addicts too. You need to change to a friend circle where people actually do other real activities. 10. Other methods (doctor): Corrective strategies include content-control software, counseling, and cognitive behavioral therapy. In all cases it is best to consult a doctor and/or apply common sense.
