Internet Protocol address of a computer - Types of IP addressBY: JNLakshmi | Category: Technology and Computers | Post Date: 2008-09-29
Recently, terrorist attacks are posing severe threat to India. Several bomb blast shook the country. We hear that the police department traced the emails sent by the terrorist about the blast and found out the location from where it was sent. All these are possible through tracing the IP address. Details below would give a quick, basic run through on the IP address. Internet protocol address in short IP address is the unique number which is assigned to your computer when you connect to internet using your internet service provider (say comcast, BSNL etc). This IP address is a 32bit number. It is written as four numbers separated by periods. In this, each number can range from 0 to 255. Say "67.169.190.212" could be an example of IP address. The IP standard defines specific address ranges within Class A, Class B, and Class C External IP address Your external IP address is the one that is always exposed to the internet, without this, you wouldn't be able to visit sites. It is the routable IP address. To know your external IP address address in a simple way, go to www.WhatIsMyIP.com and it will tell your IP address. Internal IP address Internal IP address is the one that is behind the firewall established by your Internet service provider (ISP like comcast, BSNL etc..) for security and protection. This will not be obtainable by websites. Internal IP is non-routable IP address. From your PC using the windows command prompt too, you can get the internal IP address. Here is the simple step to do it in windows OS (NT and up). To know the ip address of your PC when you are connect to the Internet, start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig 1. Click on the windows icon 2. Click on run 3. Type cmd in the box and then press enter. You will get the command prompt 4. In that type "ipconfig" (without double quotes) and press enter. This will give your IP address To know the ip address of a website say www.google.com start -> Run -> cmd -> ping www.google.com 1. Click on the windows icon 2. Click on run 3. Type cmd in the box and then press enter. You will get the command prompt 4. In that type "www.google.com" (without double quotes) and press enter. This will give IP address of google Static IP address This is the case where your PC will have static, permanent IP address. It is when you are connected through broadband connection using your ISP. Dynamic IP address When it is dial-up connection then, every time you connect to the internet through ISP you will be assigned different IP address. The ISP will configure Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to your computer. So when you connect to internet using dial-up, this DHCP will request the temporary IP address from your Internet service provider (ISP). They then assign your computer a dynamic IP address from the pool of temporary IP addresses they use for this purpose. This IP address will remain only as long as the connection exist. The time you disconnect from the internet, this IP address will die and you will have a new IP address the next time you re-connect. Tools like iplocator will give you the entire details of the IP. i.e the country, state and the city.
