Private medical insurance policies that cover maternity expenses including your mid-wife or OB and the hospital charges for new baby ward can be more expensive than similar policies that do not provide coverage for pregnancy-associated expenses. Some of our policy holders pay as much as $400 extra every month to have coverage of pregnancy costs.

Maternity Insurance: When should you add or drop coverage?

Ideally, you should be able to buy a policy that covers the cost of childbirth just before you conceive and drop it just after your last visit with your Obstetrician. However the issue of pre-existing conditions and unplanned pregnancy can make your choice of when to change to another medical insurance plan harder.

Pregnancy Coverage & Pre-existing Medical Conditions

Coverage for maternity expenses cannot necessarily be added or dropped at any time. If you're want to save money by dropping maternity coverage and buying a medical insurance policy that does not cover the cost of pregnancy, you may not be able to. This is also the case when you want to move to a healthcare that covers maternity. A current pregnancy is considered a preexisting medical condition Therefore, if you are currently pregnant at the time you apply for your policy or on the effective date of your policy, you will be turned down by most private ,medical insurance companies.

A Pregnancy Insurance Strategy

We have found that most of our clients fare better when they buy when they buy separate policies. Very often the plans that cover maternity will include other coverage that they will find unnecessary. Often the wife should get separate health insurance plan than her husband and the rest of the family.

Larger families will almost always save by purchasing a single health insurance. There are other factors that can make a difference. A good personal health insurance broker should be able to help you decide which option is best for you and your family.

Do You Need Pregnancy Insurance Now?

Unfortunately, not knowing when or if you might have a not planned pregnancy and when or if you will develop a pre-existing condition which thereby makes it hard to purchase an underwritten medical insurance policy makes that a difficult question to answer. Hopefully the information in this article makes it easier to make an informed decision. Without the ability to know the future, making a perfect decision is very difficult if not impossible.
