Smoking is one of the most dangerous practices that are practiced on a large scale around the world. Smokers are from all age groups and from both the sexes. Smoking increases the risk of diseases like hypertension and can also lead to death due to cardiac problems. It causes huge increase in the health care spending of the individual and also decreases the life span.

Various governments have tried to reduce the smoking. This has been done indirectly by increasing the prices of tobacco based products. It has had little effect on the people who smoke. Finally, the government decided to ban smoking, in public places. Though smoking is being banned only in public places, it creates a lot more breathing space, literally for the people who do not smoke.

When there is no smoking in public places, there is a decreased exposure to children. Also, it decreases the incidence of passive smoking. A complete ban on smoking may not be feasible or possible, because banning smoking completely will increase the illegal smoking.

What the government should do instead is to increase the taxes on tobacco based products further. Also, it should withdraw the subsidy given to farmers who are growing tobacco in their fields. This will decrease the amount of tobacco produced. Similarly, an incentive can be given to farmers and companies to diversify into other methods of income generation instead of their dependence on tobacco related products.

These actions will decrease the number of smokers on the long run. It will help in decreasing the government spending on heath care for patients suffering from smoking related problems. It will also increase the productivity of the people.

Before this ban on smoking became effective, there were so many instances of actors smoking in movies and television serials. This led to a spurt in the incidence of smoking in the younger generation. Children consider these stars as idols and try to imitate them. This ban has now stopped such incidents. On the long run, the effectiveness of ban on smoking will be seen when there is a decrease in the number of smokers.

These are the major benefits of banning smoking in public places. Many governments around the world already have laws governing smoking in public places. The onus now is on the regulating authorities who should be effective in making sure that the people who break this law are not let off the hook.
