The boom in Indian software industry in recent 10 years has led to migration of millions of engineers into an IT based career. Software engineers enjoy higher salaries, great benefits and opportunity to change their employers at their own wish. A high percentage of individuals also get opportunity to execute projects in foreign countries and many of those are even able to settle abroad for a great life. There is no doubt that India produces one of the most hard working software engineers in the whole world. Competition for getting in premier institutes like the IIT's is mind boggling. Considering all this the future of computer engineers looks very bright in the first glance.

What worries me the most is that people in India seems to have been completely blindfolded by the recent gains and have forgotten that what goes up eventually comes down. My major concern is the high number of engineers comming out of colleges these days and grows every year.

In recent years we have seen new engineering colleges popping up in almost every mid-sized city. Unfortunately, the owners of these engineering colleges have made this as their latest business. You must have noticed the infrastructure and staff of these institutes (It stinks !!). They are not only putting the future of these individuals at risk, but also generating individuals with sub-standard education, holding degrees which are fully recognized by the Government of India. Not all of these individuals are technically sub-standard, many of them do a good job by working hard by themselves.

Additionally, people who have been software engineers for 5-10 years are usually not good for working in any other field. They have to really start from ground-up to change their career or field or working later.

I do not think that software industry is slowing anytime soon but the availability of huge pool of engineers in future does concern me a lot. Add all the MCA, BCA, BSC computer science students and you will find yourself surrounded by software professionals. What will happen if economy slows and companies slow or stop hiring ?

Most engineers from premier institutes will probably be safe in a long run. Also, people who have made their way to other countries will probably also do quite well.

There is another detailed article regarding Indian software industry which I recommend you to read.

Please see: This (prediction / forecast ) is just my personal view point based on my common sense. It is not based on a concrete research or analysis.
