Cricket is a game that has many followers in the Indian sub continent. In fact Asia is the continent that has many countries having cricket being followed in such large numbers. There are only a few teams that are very strong and have been playing regular cricket professionally. There are also some other new teams that play cricket even at the international level with many part time players.

Introduction of cricket in Olympics

The game of cricket was first introduced in the Olympics in 1900 and after the inaugural Olympics; cricket has not been part of these games. The reason is varied. There are only a few countries that play cricket. The team event was also played as either test cricket and later as one day internationals. Even the shorter version of the game had to be played by two teams for one whole day. This was the primary reason for the lack of support for the inclusion of cricket in the ensuing Olympics.

International Olympic committee:

The international Olympic committee is the apex body that is heading the various stages of the games at various levels. This apex body is also the decision making body for the inclusion and also the exclusion of various games in the Olympics. The apex body has been putting off the inclusion of the game of cricket into the Olympics because of various reasons. The main reasons were the very few number of counties that are part fo the international cricket council as regular members. Another reason was the very long matches that have to be played to get a result.

The change in the stance:

The apex cricket body, the international cricket council has been applying for the inclusion of cricket into the Olympics for a long time. This might become reality soon. The stance of the international Olympic committee has been changing over the years. This is because of the various facts like the inclusion of many countries into the international cricket council membership as associate members. This has increased the number of countries and also the number of teams that play cricket. The other factor that is important is the decrease in the number of overs in a match to about 20 overs as in the twenty twenty cricket.

Inclusion of cricket in Olympics: To be a reality

The inclusion of the cricket into the Olympics will become a reality soon as the International Olympic committee has formally approved the inclusion of cricket by recognizing the international cricket council as a valid body. This has made it possible for the apex body in cricket to apply to become a part of the Olympics. The game has the chance to be part of Olympics from the year 2020 onwards. This is one of the greatest achievements for the apex cricket body.

The changing faces of the game:

As the scenario changes, the various organizations have made it possible for the growth of cricket and also for the development of the game. This has made it very important for the cricket playing nations to modify their stance on the game so that it can make the game better still.
