Few decades back if you told someone that people would be able to shop online, pay bills using something called internet, and even get their get travel/hotel reservations online, they would have laughed at you "big time". Further more if you told them that technology will let people to open accounts on internet only banks, get rid of their paper statements, do taxes online, chat, do video conferencing etc.., well they would have likely sent you straight to a mental asylum or drive you away thinking to be a nerd with an over influence of the StarTrek TV show. Future of workplace - No office buildings - Just work from your own home More and more companies are offering their employees ability to work from home on certain days or for off hours support. some people are also given a permanent option to work from home permanently if they are located far from the city where the building is located. This trend is likely to grow more and more to a point where people will soon realize that the conventional concrete office space is basically a complete waste of money. This will give them flexibility to hire anyone across the globe with a good internet access from their home. People will be able to hold conferences from their own home or use a specially designed office space in your nearby coffee shop. The idea of reusable office space will likely gain momentum. This is already in works: Many companies ( like Alpine Access, LiveOps, Arise, 1800-flowers) already hire work at home moms for taking orders, support, take bookings and more. Employees simply connect to the their company's phone and online system from their home. The customer being served by these reps is never able to tell if he is talking to a person sitting in a regular call center office or from home. Sites like amazon just has warehouse and the cost of doing business is greatly reduced. We will have big screens where we can see others and sort of feel a new kind of office environment. Less cars on road, less pollution, cheaper transportation etc .. Huge cost savings and flexibility: No office space means no building (lease or ownership) and other maintenance costs. No more electric, water bills, no janitor services etc.. All document . will be in electronic format. Reduced HR costs - Hiring new employees will be easy. People can take international jobs right from their own home. New set of problems: Security of data, more steps needed to prevent data hacks, fixing hardware problems remotely is difficult and lack of humanly environment. This is my imagination for now, which will likely become reality pretty soon.
