Hand washing is a hygienic activity that has to be followed by all people. There are various health benefits that are derived from adequate and good hand washing. Frequent hand washing is also very important. This will help in preventing the spread of infection. Hand washing is one of the efficient methods of infection control. Medical professionals have to take more care in their hand washing because of various reasons. One reason is the prevention of causing infection in the person being treated. Another important reason is to prevent the transfer of infection form one patient to another. This article explains when the medical professional has to clean their hand and why. This article will also help the people who are not working in the health care industry to identify the role of hand washing in preventing infection from being transferred from one person to another. Important times when a person has to wash the hands. 1. Before touching a patient: It is very important for a health care worker or even the relatives to wash their hands before they touch the ill of diseased person. The most important reason is to prevent contaminating the patient with unclean hands. This can lead to problems like spread of infection in an already ill person. Sick people usually have reduced immunity. This reduced immunity can make the individual to have a high risk of various infections. This is the main reason for the people caring for a sick person to wash their hands thoroughly before touching the patient. 2. Before a clean / Aseptic procedure is to be done: Hand washing is very important before any clean or aseptic procedure is to be done on the patient. For example, before a surgery is going to be done, the affected person is cleaned and kept ready. Under these conditions, anyone requiring to touch the patient for any reason has to wash their hands. This will prevent infection from being spread to the ill person. Another reason is that hand washing before a surgery or clean procedures to b done on the patient ill decrease the risk of infection being spread during the procedure. 3. After body fluids of a sick person is touched: When a person is sick, there is a very high chance of infection in the ill person. When someone who is either caring or treating the sick individual comes in contact with the body fluids of the sick person, then hand washing is very essential to prevent the infection from affecting the care giver. Examples of body fluids can be sweat, saliva, urine and other such fluids. 4. After touching a patient: This is very similar to the above. Even though the caregiver does not come in contact with any body fluids, it is still very important to wash the hands after touching the patient to prevent the infection from spreading. 5. Hand washing after touching the patient surroundings: Hand washing is also very important after touching the surroundings of the patient. Touching the surroundings of the patient can also cause microorganisms to be transferred from the patient to another person.
