Surgery is a risky proposition. There have been rapid strides of improvement in health care and surgical care. In spite of this there are complications of surgeries that are seen always. Surgery in health care is a highly invasive procedure where the part of the body is opened. This can be risky at times depending on the part of the body where surgery is done.

Even a simple surgery can suddenly become complicated. Fatalities are common during surgery and also due to complications after surgery. The risk has reduced compared to yester years, but some of the risk remains. There are various objectives that have been brought out by the World Health Organization for safe surgery. They are listed below and explained adequately.

1. The surgical team has to operate on the correct patient on the correct site.:
This may seem silly for some, but in recent times there has been a spate of cases where the patient has been wrongly operated or operated on the wrong site. Confusion can occur due to overcrowding of hospitals, miscommunication and also lack of concentration. This is gross negligence and has to be avoided.

2. Patient has to be protected from pain, but anesthesia should not be harmful: Anesthesia can be deadly. It is a deadly concoction that has claimed thousands of lives worldwide. The reason is that anesthesia can have different effect on different people of differing age groups. Though pain relief is essential during surgery, adequate care has to be taken to ensure that the patient has no complications because of the anesthesia.

3. Prepare adequately for loss of airway and respiratory function: This can occur due to the anesthesia that is administered. All operating theaters should have emergency equipment to revive the patient if there is a loss of breathing. Ventilator care can also help these patients.

4. Prepare for high blood loss: The operating surgeon usually is prepared beforehand during major surgeries for any excessive blood loss that may occur. Sometimes even a minor surgery can become complicated due to loss of excessive blood. This can even be fatal. So the surgeon should be prepared for this complication.

5. Minimize risk of infection: Infection is one of the major complications for post surgery death. Infection can occur because of unsterile precautions. This can lead to septicemia in some patients. Infections are a serious complication of surgery and have to be avoided at all costs.

6. Prevent retention of instruments in wounds: This can again seem to be very silly, but there have been instances where even scissors have been left inside the body of a surgery patient. This can be prevented by adequate concentration and care during and also after the surgery.

7. Identify specimens after surgery: All surgeries are done to either modify or remove a part of tissue. All the specimens that have been removed from the body has to be secured and adequately identified. This will help to diagnose and treat a patient.

These are some of the important objectives for safe surgery that should be adhered to.
