Blood is one of the most important parts of the body. It gives life to the person. It has many major functions. It keeps all parts of the body alive. If the blood supply to a part of the body stops, the person will die. The blood transports nutrients to all parts of the body. It also carries the life giving gas Oxygen from the lungs to the various parts of the body. IT brings back Carbon dioxide from the various body parts, back to the lungs to be expelled.

Required blood: A normal human adult requires about five to six litres of blood for normal body functions to continue.

Components of blood: The blood of human beings contains a fluid called plasma in which there are suspended elements. The other parts of the blood are the White Blood Cells(WBC's), Red Blood Cells (RBC's) and Platelets.

Functions of the components of blood:

1. Plasma :
This carries the various substances like glucose, fats, proteins, enzymes and hormones. This is because of the liquid nature of the plasma.

2. RBC's: The RBC's carry the Oxygen from the lungs to the various parts of the body. This is an important function of blood. It also helps to bring back the Carbon Dioxide from the tissues to be breathed out of the body.

3. WBC's: These cells act as scavengers of the body. They help the immune system of the body and therefore act as a defense force of the body. They help to fight and kill any organism that enters the body.

4. Platelets: These substances help in clotting and also coagulation of the blood. When ever there is a bleeding injury, the blood stops flowing after a particular time. This is because of the mechanism called clotting of the blood in which the platelets play a major role.

Blood groups:

Each individual has two grouping types. One is the ABO grouping. The other is the Rh factor. The Rh is short form for Rhesus.

In the ABO grouping, the blood can be grouped as A group, B group, AB group and the O group. The other grouping is the Rh factor that can be either positive or negative.

Each of the A, B, AB and O groups can be either Rh positive or Rh negative. All the mentioned blood groups can also have sub groups.

Importance of knowing the blood group:

There are various reasons for knowing the blood group. They are:

1. To identify a person in case there is some confusion in various other aspects.

2. To know in case of emergency when the person needs to be transfused with blood. This is because blood from some other group may not be compatible and can cause reactions, sometimes leading to death.

3. To take appropriate measures to prevent the death of the intra uterine child if the Rh factor of the blood of the parents are different. This can cause Erythroblastosis foetalis which is a condition affecting the child of parents having different Rh factors.

These are the important facts that everyone should know of blood and blood groups.
